The article about neglected teens and teen age violence seems to be the Only View the stars and stripes desires to have about military teens in Europe. There is an excellent organization called club beyond which works with military teens All Over Europe giving them great activities and positive moral teaching through weekly meetings and Well sponsored trips throughout the year. Club beyond just sponsored a work project to Romania and Kenya and look More than 350 teens and sponsors to give compassionate Aid to the people of those countries. These teens raised their own support plus paid for the materials needed and then spent their Spring break working hard to help others. This happens every year and each time there is a waiting list of teens who want to go but cannot because of the limited space. In a frustrated because we worked unsuccessfully to try to include an article about these teens and this great project they were involved in. Yet there seems to limit on articles written about the problems we have with teens. We have Many great teens in the military and some Fine organizations willing to work with them Ana provide positive moral activities for them. Why wont the stars and stripes report about them on the front Page or any other Page for that matter ? a Donna Croasman Heidelberg Germany a Quot axes parents a get real in the army and air Force Exchange services vows to limit adult magazines a letter writer wrote about his sympathy and his feelings. A Jim Crook bad Kreuz Nach Germany a German Hospital helped at the time read the letter a health care ailing May Isi was and am presently in a German Hospital i have been diagnosed with encephalitis some sort of pressure to the brain causing sleeplessness and an inability to walk among other things. My problem was in the hands of the military for three years encompassing four different hospitals including fort Sam Houston Texas the army a medical training facility. In that time the army had done two tests and had no idea what was wrong with me. Within two hours in the German emergency room the doctor already knew what was wrong and had begun conducting tests to find the source. In three Days in the Hospital 1 have had 11 different tests done and have already completed the treatment for an imbalance in my Spina fluid. This letter is not to put Down the military health care but to boost your Confidence in foreign health care. It is also to say that the letter writer should look at the Flag of your Host nation and you will see that English is a second language. With 12 years in the country and the inability to Converse in the local language it sounds like the main problem is not the loss of the medical facilities. A sgt. Jacob h. When plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a Day were being developed the question arose of what role the germans should play in the rituals of remembrance. They had been the enemy in 1944, the defenders of hitlers wicked regime. But for most of the last half Century germans have been allies not enemies. An invitation should have been extended a and accepted a in recognition of shared participation in the tragedy of the War and of Germany a escape from nazism. An invitation need not have been a denial of the evil inflicted by Hitler. It would have created an Opportunity to recall the deeper meaning of a Day without assigning guilt to survivors who at the time were mostly in their teens and 20s. But the idea was not widely welcomed on either Side German officials and veterans understandably displayed Little eagerness to join the party in Honor of their defeat. And those embarking on a vacation trip to the land and time of what writer studs Terkel called a the. Good War had Little appetite for the ambiguities of a German presence. The Issue raised interesting questions of How and Why great Battles Are remembered and whether a distinction ought to be drawn Between the Celebration of a particular Battle and that of an entire War. The american mood for a Day 1994, was a combination of nostalgia for a simpler age when the moral Ana political purpose of War was Clear justifiable congratulation for a Complex task successfully and quickly completed and the fun of reliving a tremendous adventure. There were Wreath laying and memorial services but the occasion was not primarily for mourning or meditation on human Folly. But there Are other ways of remembering. Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg in 1863 reaffirmed deep philosophical values. Nov. 11, 1918, armistice Day was Long commemorated with a minute of silence and Hope that world War i had been the War to end All wars. And two sides can use shared memories to heal and reconcile. For example american veterans of the Vietnam War have increasingly been meeting and comparing recollections with their one time foes. And yet some memories Are so bitter that they can be shared with Only the greatest difficulty if at All. President Reagan a visit to and conciliatory remarks at the military cemetery in bit Burg Germany in 1985 were condemned because some German is troops were buried the reformations that personified the brutality of nazism and played a role in the holocaust. Less than a year after this years a Day ceremonies however there will be a greater occasion for remembrance the soil anniversary of be Day marking the German surrender of May 8,1945, be Day could become another Triumph of victors although the fact that the soviet Union made the greatest contribution in blood to that Victory adds a problematic dimension. Or it could and should be an occasion for americans canadians British other europeans russians and citizens of the newly Independent states formerly in the soviet Union and especially of All germans to celebrate the defeat of or liberation from nazism.
