Cotton bowl officials must compete this year with other bowls for the right to remain a top rank new years Day College football bowl game. The conference commissioners have said they expect to retain Only three new years Day bowls to go with the Rose bowl in Pasadena Calif. A Over the past few weeks its become abundantly Clear that if we were to make the first Cut we had to consider moving the game to Texas stadium a Crawford said. Since 1937, when the event was founded by oilman Curtis Sanford Crawford a father in Law the game has been played in the fair Park stadium whose name it shares. A without question the football game has enjoyed a great tradition. However i think its important that we be Clear that the tradition is the game itself not where the game is played a Crawford said. A the Bottom line is if we done to have a game we wont have to worry about where to play a major Issue in the decision was the a a perception among College football and network television officials that the downtown stadium is too exposed to inclement Winter weather Crawford said. Bartlett said Friday that Crawford had Quot betrayed a the City with the decision to move the Cotton bowl game to the suburbs. However Crawford told reporters on monday that lie warned Bartlett last year that a move to Texas Staci uni was possible and again two weeks ago that such a move was a a Strong after the news conference Bartlett said he had responded then by offering Crawford the City s help in keeping the game in Dallas a the said he understood a Bartlett said. Quot i assumed from that that either that option would be taken off the table or at least the Cotton bowl would come Back to the City with an Opportunity to discuss it. Neither of those two things Crawford conceded that he might not have spoken clearly to Bartlett. Quot i think the shortfall in the process was that the mayor and perhaps others did not have the Opportunity to talk Agam before we made the final decision a he said. Depending on whether the players strike the reds obligation to Gant this season could be minimal. The signing of Gant for 1995 leaves the reds with considerably less motivation to sign left fielder Kevin Mitchell when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Gant like Mitchell is a left fielder. During a visit to reds general manager Jim Bowden on june 3 at riverfront stadium Gant said he would Only be interested in playing for a club that would put him in the lineup every Day. It appears however that Gant wont be Able to take an every Day position with the reds until next season. The reds Are committed to Mitchell in left Field Deion Sanders in Center and Reggie Sanders in right. Gant broke in at third and could fill in there behind Tony Fernandez when healthy Gant is one of the most versatile and dangerous offensive players in the game. He has twice reached the 30-30 plateau at least 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in the same season. When he first pulled it off in 1990, with 32 homers and 33 steals he became Only the 13th player in major league history to do it. The 29-year-old became a free agent during Spring training when the braves Cut him Loose after be had broken his right leg in the off season by crashing his motorcycle into a tree. By releasing Gant in Spring training the braves who had signed him to a one year Deal for $5 million reduced their obligation to $833,333. Quot we All wish Ronnie Hadnot run that Bike into a tree a said braves general manager John Schuerholz whose club missed Gantus right handed Bat so much that it dealt Deion Sanders to the reds to acquire right handed hitting Center fielder Roberto Kelly on May 29. The reds and the Boston red sox were the two clubs most seriously pursuing Gant. The reds flew Gant to Cincinnati on june 3 for discussions with Bowden and his special assistant Gene Bennett along with an evaluation of his leg and medical records from reds medical consultant or. Scott Jolson. A a he a such a great Talent that to have him on the free agent Market and not take a look at him would be stultifying ridiculous Quot said Bowden. Gant said at the Lime that he would be ready to play in about a month though he added he wanted a Deal within a couple weeks so he could begin working out with his new club and taking batting practice. About his medical condition and the word from Jolson at the time Gant said Quot they said they saw nothing that would hinder me from running once in a recovered.
