L e s to a a e re r screen rhetoric the Secretary of the army wants More jobs opened to women according to your recent article. A while he sat it he should direct that the sexually discriminatory standards measured by the army physical readiness test part be made gender Neu Tud. The part is one of the few institutionally discriminatory fixtures remaining in army life. Men and women have traditionally been held to significantly different part standards. Physiological differences make absolute standards of strength a .1 endurance More difficult but not impossible for women. But these differences do not justify different standards for men and women. Each soldiers Job requires a certain level of strength and endurance. That requirement does not depend on the soldiers gender. Someone who scores the minimum on the current women a part May be Able for example to adequately handle the Job of administration specialist anywhere in the army. But if that is True holding a Man to a higher Standard just because he a a Man is sexually discriminatory. If its not True then retaining and promoting women who done to meet the real Standard is also discriminatory. Whether soldiers in different specialities should be held to different standards is debatable. Some say holding an admin specialist to the same standards As an infantryman makes no sense. Others of us say All soldiers need a foundational set of infantry skills physical fitness included and should be held to the same standards. That is Why the common task test is basically infantry skill oriented. Eradicating sex discrimination in the army a physical fitness standards and keeping the standards High would eliminate a major objection to opening More specialities to women. Conversely by not equalizing fitness Standard the army undercuts True equal Opportunity. It docs so by using to rhetoric As a smoke screen for feminist empowerment which arc often not the same things. A Steven ii. Cary Vicenza Italy standardize recycling a it a o in regard to the article a Recycle trash or face penalties a i Irmburg area residents told june 8my.question is what Are service members retired personnel and department of defense civilians who live on the Economy supposed to do with trash from food products bought out of the commissary which do not have the German a Green punkt sticker for those of us who live on the Economy recycling has been around a Long time. The germans make us separate our trash and those waste products that have a Green punkt arc put in separate bags which Are especially labelled As such for special handling. We have a Large Green plastic trash bin for newspapers and cardboard. Leftover food stuffs Are put in special Bio containers and picked up every other week. Some people can use a compost for grass dead plants Etc. To biodegrade naturally and reuse for the Garden and Yard. The thrust of my question is the food stuffs bought out of the commissary. They done to have the Green punkt Label unless it is a German procured item. Such things As the styrofoam used for meats milk Cartons plastic containers with All kinds of food stuffs plastic bread sacks and on and on. What Are we to do with these items if this is to become a regulation on july 1, then what measures will be taken to help those of us on the Economy to get rid of our a a recyclable trash if we can to take it to a military installation who will make the determination As to How commissary items will or will not be marked with the Green punkt there needs to be some measures taken to ensure the people living on the Economy have the same facilities made available to us to be Able to get rid of the things purchased in the commissary and Post Exchange As those living in government and leased quarters. I commentary 1 get to know soccer a maybe you la love it by Charles Mcdowell Richmond times dispatch the hardest thing about soccer maybe apart from watching a game All the Way to the end is mastering the Basic foot culture of it much More is going on Here than players kicking a Ball. They Are handling it with the dexterity of jugglers but with the feet. They Are running dodging faking and lunging not just kick passing the Ball but controlling it individually dribbling it bouncing it around foot to foot in a Way that would get an ovation in an old vaudeville theater. My observation has been that americans can play soccer from age 5 through Junior High and still have a better Chance at getting really Good at another game say basketball the problem is without much soccer on american television our kids Are not inspired to give most of their spare Lime to soccer. So where the worlds favorite sport is concerned few americans Are truly adept at leaping into a Back flip and delivering a powerful upside Down kick to a Ball that was passing Over their head. 1 a anyway the world cup soccer tournament is being played in the United states for the first time in stadiums from Washington to the Rose bowl 52 games among 24 nations including a surprising United slates team Are expected to attract a million and a half fans from abroad and a worldwide television audience of 2 billion. So As the new York times headlined an impressive even portentous special Section a awake America let soccer once awake we need to remind ourselves not to get irritated at this a a foreign game. The following Are rules i came up with to guide my own behaviour a done to be put off when the British and other visitors refer to this game As America really does t own the word for our quite different sport. Face it they play their game with their feet. In our game Only two or three specialists touch a Ball with a foot. A the wild emotionalism of soccer fans can be unsettling but remember that their behaviour often relieves whole nations need for other riots Over social or political issues. A yes soccer can seem terribly simple As a game but it also Points up How far we americans go in the other direction with separate offensive and defensive teams first Downs Field goals huddles timeouts variable and often controversial penalties with television replays and pretentious analysis and coaches waving their arms or just frowning wisely to dominate tvs intense coverage of the sidelines. A the relentlessness of this game the Ball almost always in play the time always running a such characteristics reduce opportunities for spectators to order hot dogs and drinks watch cheerleaders and mascots and listen to bands.
