Feeling duped in this time of it fright sizing a and economic uncertainty i am extremely concerned that Navy and Marine corps Relief is funding 50 percent of a family members College tuition up to $300 a term. This program Only applies to military families assigned to overseas duty stations. Additionally the Money is Given As a Grant and docs not have to be paid Back the military should not be obligated to pay College course fees for family members. I am shocked and feel deceived that this fund specifically intended to Aid sailors and marines with a genuine need has been misused for the past two years for non critical assistance. For too Many years sailors have complained that Navy Relief was unable to meet their emergency needs. I have always supported the yearly Navy Relief drive telling my subordinates to focus on the Many people Navy Relief has helped not those who have been denied assistance. Now i feel duped. No one in my office knew Navy Relief was paying for College courses and were upset when they found out about the overseas tuition program. Education is extremely worthwhile and commendable but not at the Cost of denying one Sailor or Marine funds when he or she truly needs them. A it. Kathryn of Evans Rota Spain. Cafes gets bum rap As a proud member of the army and air Force Exchange service family i would like to respond to the letter a fight its a shame that with All of the positives cafes has to offer some people choose to dwell Only on the negatives. Cafes offers some of the highest Quality training of any retail outlet stores. Positions Are filled primarily by family members who otherwise would have an exceptionally hard time obtaining pm. Ploy ment on the Economy. These employees Are our parents spouses children and siblings. All cafes employees have High performance standards. Occasionally you May encounter someone who is not As courteous or helpful As they should be. Please try to remember that everyone has a bad Day now and then. For the most part cafes employees go out of their Way to help. The Exchange system.1 strives to keep prices Down while providing the military family members with the necessities and niceties of life of excellent Quality a. Portion of cafes profits Are redirected to 86th services which keep our Community provided with recreational activities Bowling recreation. Centers the Aero club gymnasiums and toilet skating to name a few. People who find shopping at cafes distasteful have the option of shopping on the Economy. Not Only will they find the prices higher in general but these stores do not contribute any of their profits to our military Community. So if you wish to fight cafes go ahead but this is counterproductive to supporting your military Community. A can to see Benefit i have recently been stationed overseas and have noticed the outrageous prices in the army and air Force Exchange service. Going in the local Exchange 1 looked to buy of All things underwear a package of. Three saying jockey Cost $10.25, and that Wasny to the worst of it. That was the Only ones they had you can get a package of 6 pair that say Hanes at Wal Mart for $6.99. I also made a trip to the local military clothing store also run by cafes one pair of Black combat socks for Wear with the Battle dress uniforms bus 57.50. A 75-Watt transformer a definite necessity overseas,$45, and its not even big enough to run most items. I keep being told that being Able to use the base Exchange is one of my benefits of being in the military. I just done to see the Benefit. 1 guess i even complain if 1 was in. The United states because then i would have a Choice to shop elsewhere. But there arc some items that you. Just can to buy anywhere else when you pc overseas. What i see Here is one company having a monopoly. They currently run everything on the base from the shop Petty base Exchange military clothing sales and now my stars and stripes Bookstore is being taken Over by cafes. There goes another pleasure of mine. I am sure i wont pay their prices for books either. I think the exchanges Are out of touch with their customers. Most of us in the military cannot afford to pay these prices. I really do not care whether my underwear say jockey or Hanes As Long As they done to Cost too much. Until they re affordable ill just do without. A. A Alan incur Likay Turkey hospitality appreciated being a Veteran of a Day in Normandy my wife and 1 went Back this june to the celebrations on the 50th anniversary. The weather was not too Good nor were the empty words of our commander in chief but the transportation problem was a Little strenuous for us old vets. After the buses left the ceremony area we did not go directly Back to the transportation Assembly area we were taken to a Small town liberated after a Day. Here we were invited to lunch. The town had set up a banquet in the town sport Hall for the american veterans and their guests. The lunch was Ai three course affair with a wine cocktail and bottles of Burgundy wine on the tables. This lunch was furnished in appreciation for being freed so Many years ago and there was no charge. I tried to make a donation but they would not hear of it. What really impressed me was All the Happy smiling faces of the French ladies and gentlemen who served us All of whom i am sure were the children and grandchildren of those who were Liber a cd. This was a very unselfish generous and heart warming operation. American ?T40s music was played and songs Sung by students were very touching. All this friendliness impressed me so much i began to think about the stories about the germans not being invited to the ceremonies. I also began to think about All the Western european countries that were liberated. Now i am wondering after so Many of our military personnel Are leaving Europe How Many of these grateful thank you Gratis banquets Are taking place i la bet not Many. It was not the free lunch that impressed me. It was the people giving from their hearts their time and Effort in a wonderful show of appreciation for what we did so Long ago. I will be contacting. The mayor of this town in Normandy to find out if there is anything i can do to express my appreciation for their towns hospitality. I nope some of the other Hun it dress that were there will do the same. A John c. Heegman Ramstein a Germany. Consider animal welfare vacation time perhaps a trip to another country Spain for instance. If you Are planning a vacation consider that other countries have very different attitudes particularly in the treatment of animals. The methods of enticing tourists to spend Money sometimes involve a life of misery for the animals which Are used. It is tempting to spend a few moments taking your child a photograph Riding of the tiny Pony harnessed to a motorized wheel. Inc Money which you hand Over for the few moments of so called a a entertainment is contributing to extreme cruelty resulting in some cases in the death of the animal. Animal welfare organizations Are working with the Spanish government to get this practice of thie a live Carousel stopped. They want to convince the owners of the ponies that they can still make a living by treating the animals humanely. Pony rides do not have to involve the Ani. Mats being forced to trudge in circles for More than 14 hours per Day in sweltering temperatures hooked up to a motorized rotating wheel. The Speed is dictated by the operator and rest were found to be almost nonexistent by a team of investigators monitoring this practice. Heart attacks crippling and lameness Are visible results of the abuse. What you done to see in the few moments while your child is Riding one of these trapped animals is the hope1 less life of misery. There Are Many other aspects of foreign countries such As Spain which Are Well Worth experiencing. Help stamp out cruelty by choosing where to spend your Dollar. A a. Burgess a.
