I go to the Bookstore in a Well earned Day off pay my 50 cents for the sunday edition kick Back and read an article by Lynnette Bukowski a quit the whining women you can to have it All a june 26. Of boy. You All have got some explaining to do to this Soldier. Is it fair for me to ask who Lynnette Bukowski is yes. She devotes nearly a full Page to her theories of physiology bloat my physics a bomb Button the Quality of military training and her analysis of the Gulf War no picnic. In the end though All i read is the following a a my husband has been a Navy Seal for 19 years. Back off babe. I done to Trust you or your motive s. A they can to say it but i can. These men done to need ouch. I done to need the West Point debate team or the american Gladiator ladies to Tell me that those Are fighting words. Of stars and stripes. I am a reasonable person. I can read expert articles examining the role of women in combat without wanting to clobber the nearest Man in Green but keep it objective and informative please. To Bukowski i would borrow from the name of the sunday Magazine column and invite her to a be our i done to know much about being a Pilot Manning a missile control panel or training for special forces but i do know a Little about my Corner of the world. After a full Day of training with the military police a or any unit for that matter a you May decide that it is not such a a gender circus after All. It is just hard work with Good Days i am too tired to even remember to track the lunar cycles. Now Back to my Coke and the sunday paper. A Ginger Guilmartin Mannheim German must be better Way i think there a a general consensus concerning the army and air Force Exchange service and its monopolistic retail practices. It is True that cafes has the monopoly Here on poor service poor merchandise my bedroom lamps lasted three months poor selections poor management ties in with poor service i think and High prices i cannot wait until i can go to Wal Mart. I am beginning to believe that sour grapes Are the Norm As far As cafes is concerned but cafes is not entirely at fault Here. Part of the problem that i see is the Oral Roberts Jerry Falwell disciples who would seek to undermine even More of the freedoms that we As americans enjoy i.e., the Freedom to read about and look at pictures of people who frolic in their birthday suits for Money who Are we to judge. If people Are so concerned about their children Why not sit Down with cafes and devise a better Way to do business instead of trying to remove items that they might find a a personally offensive As far As that goes i will give cafes a thumbs up when they take Over the bookstores they will do a really Good Job of covering up those a Robert Downs Bacn Hauson Germany wised up to cafes with so Many military members dissatisfied with the services that the army and air Force Exchange service is providing in the Post exchanges it is hard to understand Why the stars and stripes bookstores Are now being taken Over by cafes. We know that cafes will claim there will be no Price increases and it will say the choices of books and magazines will stay the same. What cafes does not know is that we All know it is lying just As it did with the class i and the military clothing sales. V can no one hold cafes accountable for its promises or actions Kendall Rice a Derheim Germany commentary some by Rowland nethaway one of the lessons drummed into my Young head was to never hit a girl. My father was Adamant on that Point. A son you never hit a girl. No matter what she does you never hit a it was like being a bully he said Only worse. It was a gentlemanly. It was unmanly. It was cowardly. Why my daughter asked do men beat up on women i done to know i said. Perhaps they were not trained properly when they were children. But what was proper in the 1940s and 1950s May not be proper now. Maybe it Wasny to even proper then. Who a to say altitudes change. Relationships Between men and women Are markedly different today than they were when i was being taught How to be a Man. For instance my father also told me to never run from a fight. It Only makes matters worse. He said if he Ever caught me running from a fight i could expect a second whipping from him. Of course he column insults marines the june 26 Tony Kornheiser column was obviously More word than wit. I have heard countless stereotypical insults about the armed services in my time. I spent three years on recruiting duty for the army in the Midwest but Kornheiser a bantering is definitely in the top 10. I am sure that he is an expert in the effectiveness and fashion of . Military equipment. That same equipment worked fairly Well a few years ago in places like Kuwait City and Khanji. I would also be willing to Wager that the marines on Diego Garcia or at Camp Pendleton calif., do not care if Kornheiser likes their hair or not. In reference to marines looking like a Windup dolls a that is clearly insulting Kornheiser and All americans Are in great debt to All the armed forces every single Day. The armed forces Are like a Chimney in the summertime. They Are not App re dated until the Snow comes. We protect Kornheiser a. Right to create words that Hurt our spirit. God bless America. A a sgt. When it came to girls the rules were exactly opposite. Teachers enforced the same rules. If a boy struck a girl someone was sure to Tell the teacher. To the taunts of his classmates the boy would be led out of the classroom. Or off the playground and straight to the principals office. It also was wrong to play rough with the girls during recess. If a boy got too aggressive with crack the whip and caused a girl to cry the boy was in trouble. Some girls would cry if you looked at them Cross eyed. Others were just As Tough As any of the boys. But the rules were inflexible a boys did no to Hurt girls. Around the fifth Grade a girl named Rosie blindsided me on the playground and followed that up with a 50-Yard kick against the wind to a tender part it must have been something i said. Perhaps she just wanted to get my attention. At that time Rosie had a few inches and several pounds on me. She still May for All i know. Anyway i really wanted to pop Rosie on her nose. But i and she knew it. Boys did no to hit girls and they certainly did no to complain about getting hit by girls. And they also did no to qty or at least they tried not to cry. It was unmanly. Gender roles have changed As Well As attitudes on most subjects. We Hope the changes mean civilization is marching Forward. But society has not made noticeable Progress toward stopping men from beating women. Domestic violence needs to be brought out in the open. The judicial system must crack Down on Domestic violence. But in addition there needs to be a renewed Effort to teach boys that it is wrong to hit girls. Children should be taught to respect themselves and others. They must be taught to take responsibility for their actions and once again boys who hit girls and who grow up to hit women should be branded bullies and cowards.
