Kudos knocks i enjoyed your article on father Damien and his work with the lepers at Kalaupapa. May i Point out a minor error the caption under his photograph said he died of leprosy. Actually though he contracted leprosy the cause of death was tuberculosis. This same error is on the base of his statue in front of the Capitol building in Honolulu. I would also like to question another recent statement in the stars and stripes in february approximately caption under a picture said Crispus Attucks was the first person to die for americans Freedom. Attucks was one of five people w to died in the Boston massacre he was shot twice and based on a description of the entry wounds and a memory of Anatomy from serving As an army medic 40 years ago i would say he probably died of puncture of both lungs. I have never found a description of the exit wounds. If this is True Nis wounds would not necessarily have been immediately fatal. However another victim Samuck Gray reportedly fell immediately when lie was shot. From descriptions in the., trial records of the Case i would say it is Likely that Gray died before Attucks -. I also question setting the Boston massacre to Mark the first deaths for american Freedom. Just a few Day earlier a 12-Ycar-pld boy died under similar circumstances in Boston the main difference being that he was killed by a customs agent rather than a uniformed Soldier. Also these events took place six years before the declaration of Independence was signed. In fact Between the time of the Boston massacre and the signing Thomas Jefferson the author of the declaration was a British legislator. Those involved in the events considered the Boston massacre a shooting of British civilians by British soldiers and not involving a strike for Freedom. Soldiers involved were tried by a British court and punished by British officials they were defended by John Adams who is remembered As an Early american Patriot. A while i do enjoy catching errors i also enjoy paying compliments. In that vein May i say what an outstanding Job the stars and stripes did on covering the Normandy observances. And i would like to say Bow much i have enjoyed your thursday travel inserts during the five years i have been in Germany. Commentary 1 Clinton response to Rwanda justified by the new York Tinics the 2 million terrified rwandans who have fled to neighbouring countries Are now dying at the rate of one a minute for Lack of Safe water and sanitation facilities cholera threatens the makeshift Camps that have sprung up around the zairian town of Goma. President Clinton who on Friday called it the worst humanitarian crisis in a generation has finally begun to respond with the Energy this widening disaster demands. Obviously As Clinton stressed the first need is to assure the survival of rwandans most of them huts who have formed human Rivers flowing across frontiers. He promises that an Aerial Armada flying round the clock to Entebbe Uganda will Airlift food water and Medicine to. Various Camps. Crossing another important threshold the president is sending . Troops to Monitor the humanitarian operation. If Only Washington had done half As much before this human flood crested. Still Rwanda is at last getting priority attention. As Clinton said the essential corollary to the humanitarian Airlift is to create conditions within Rwanda that will. Permit refugees to return. In what could be a Long term commitment he promises logistical support for a full contingent of in. Peacekeepers to help that process along Clinton properly holds out a hand to the Tutsi led Rwanda patriotic front which began As a rebel Force but is now the governing authority in Kigali the capital. But wisely he stipulates three conditions for . Recognition the formation of a Broad based government re. Spect for the Rule of Law and a policy of reconciliation with the majority huts. Since the new regime has already named huts As president and prime minister and since the patriotic front agreed last year to a settlement based on reconciliation the . Conditions seem just and realistic. The very scale of the response the president is mobilizing should begin to reassure rwandans who took flight after hearing venomous and hysterical broadcasts warning that insurgent armies were Bent on Slaughter. There is Strong evidence that the most Savage killings were perpetrated by the former regime and that patriotic front commanders have done what they could to prevent reprisal massacres. Specialists plausibly argue that years of living and fighting in Uganda where ethnic strife has been tamed by reconciliation has moderated the fronts leadership. All this will soon be put to the test along with urgent efforts by the , High commissioner for refugees to persuade those fleeing to return. Nobody can say for certain what will now happen to the a Safe area in Southern Rwanda established by 2,500 French troops who Are to withdraw soon. But after a faltering Start in which the United states seemed unable even to Supply personnel carriers to Rwanda Clinton has initiated something very like president Bush a operation provide Comfort which helped save the lives of a half million kurd who fled their Homes in Iraq. But nato allies were major helpers then and could assuredly contribute More in Rwanda today. Mean time the president needs and deserves Public support at Home.
