We All take Pride in the jobs we do whether it is the paperwork pulling the Gate or on patrol. I realize there Are a few bad apples out there but we do our Best to get rid of them. I take serious offence to this Many a letter. The fact that he Bunches us All in one group shows How ignorant he really is. He is not the one doing the foot patrols in his housing area while others Are in bed sleeping. He Quot is not the one going to Domestic disturbances that get violent and sometimes life threatening to restore order. He is not the one who tries to save the life of a person who tries to commit suicide. He is not the one who tries to offer Comfort to a wife or a child As we Are Rushing them to the Hospital because the husband decided to severely assault them. He is not the one who responds to numerous unannounced alarm activations never knowing if they Are for real or another false alarm. Finally he is not the one who goes to work every Day knowing he she might not come Home. I love my Job. If i save one life Stop one thief if i Comfort a child who has been beaten or has seen his mom or dad die in a major Accident then i am doing my Job. Rodeos abuse animals in reference to the a Rodeo and Jamboree advertisement in stripes Magazine aug 11i wonder if your readers realize that Many Rodeo events Are cruel to animals and operate under the Guise of Rodeo As being an All american tradition that provides harmless family Fuji. In truth rodeos Trace their beginnings to the late 1880s and served As occasions for ranchers and ranch hands to get together for a break from their daily routine. Today a Rodeo is a multimillion Dollar business a show business a condemned by every major animal Protection organization in the United states. A the humane society of the United states and the american humane association have formulated the following statement a was animal Protection organizations we contend that rodeos Are not accurate or harmless portrayals of ranching skills rather they display and encourage an insensitivity to and acceptance of brutal treatment of animals in the name of sport. Such callous disregard of our moral obligations toward other living creatures has a negative Impact on Socie Sias a whole and on impressionable Chil. Ren in parents please consider the following before you expose your children to the Rodeo style of cruelty to animals in the calf roping event a Young calf is travelling at approximately 25 Mph when it is roped at the neck and jerked to the ground. Young calves Are often severely injured in the Throat and neck areas by the violent trauma done to them in the name of bucking Broncos and bulls Buck for one reason to try to get rid of the torment caused by a leather bucking strap cinched tightly around their flanks. If you watch the chutes carefully you will see Rodeo cowboys pull on the flank bucking strap before the horse or Bull enters the Arena. Even a tame horse will Buck and twist when the tender genital area of its body is abused in this Way. A nowhere is it written that animals Are to be abused and tormented in the name of entertainment. I Hope readers will consider the facts and think twice before they subject the minds of their children to the arrogance greed and ignorance that compel today a rodeos. I appreciate that the advertisement for the Rodeo Jamboree listed its sponsors. My family and i will Boycott All companies listed. Rita Roe Bartlett Pitburg a Germany commentary Clinton needs to balance cuban policy by the new York times Low politics not High principle inspired president Clinton a ditching of the double Standard that for the last 28 years gave cuban refugees near automatic entry into the United states. Now fleeing cubans risk being stopped at sea by the coast guard or Navy and returned to of All places . Base at Guantanamo Bay Cuba. It is a Hasty harsh and unnecessary move. But at least it brings a semblance of Equality to Washington a treatment of those fleeing impoverished Caribbean tyrannies. And it that with the cold War Over Cuba is no longer a special Case. The next logical step which the administration unfortunately shows no sign of taking would be to formulate constructive diplomatic policies toward Cuba that could help ease the Way to a democratic Post Castro future. The new policy is designed to deter the thousands of cubans who have been preparing to leave since Fidel Castro a regime stopped interfering with departures earlier this month. Those who elude the coast guard and reach . Soil will be detained indefinitely upon arrival Only those who apply and Are found eligible for Asylum before leaving Cuba will now receive automatic admission. That is roughly the same policy now applied to haitians with one crucial difference. To apply for Asylum while still living in Haiti is to court murderous retaliation from government thugs while discontented cubans at least Tor now Are virtually being encouraged to leave. In both countries the United states is intentionally contributing to popular discontent with Tough economic sanctions. In both cases generous treatment of the unintended victims of . Foreign policy has been Defeated by the politics of populist panic. Gov. Lawton Chiles of Florida facing a Tough re election fight triggered Clinton a move by declaring a statewide emergency thursday. Clinton whose own 1980 re election bid in Arkansas was damaged when cuban detainees from the last mass exodus rioted at an Arkansas detention Camp readily sympathized with his fellow democrats political plight. He also needs Florida a electoral votes for himself in 1996. The latest departures began after an anti Castro riot on the Havana waterfront two weeks ago the most visible political protest in years. The Castro regime May not exactly be in its death throes but it is reeling from the global collapse of communism the loss of russian Trade subsidies and the Lack of any obvious successor to Castro. That would seem to offer openings for a diplomatic mixture of incentives and threats that have begun to lure communism a other orphans such As Vietnam and North Korea out of their isolation. Yet for fear of angering the ferociously anti Castro lobbies that Are so powerful in Florida and new Jersey politics . Policy has been purely punitive aimed at building up explosive pressures in Cuba. The administration is trying to sell its refugee ban a and new package of economic and political pressures a to cuban american hard liners As part of this same Effort. Interestingly Bernard Aronson who served As assistant Secretary of state for latin America in the Bush administration and whose hard line credentials Are not in doubt presented in the Washington Post last week a More nuanced policy that would offer specific . Diplomatic incentives As a Reward for Steps toward democracy in Cuba. Such a policy is in fact suggested by the cuban democracy act of 1992. Unlike the sanctions provisions of that legislation the suggestions for a possible diplomatic opening have never been followed up. It is not in the Best tradition of the United states to interdict refugees. It is surely not in the Best interest of the United states a a or Quot of cuban democracy to encourage violent upheaval in Cuba without also offering some Hope of peaceful change.
