Big brother coming the article titled curb rights to Hal crime polled americans say sept. 11 should have shocked and frightened every Soldier who has sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United states. The cited statistics that "84 percent of the respondents Are willing to modify or even repeal the second amendment right to Bear arms and that a majority of americans favor giving police broader Power to Stop and search suspects even without probable cause Are in them selves meaningless because of the narrow Way in which the poll was conducted. What gives this article its chilling importance is the use to which polls Are put by the american news Media. This article and others like it Are not in tended to report Public opinion. Such articles Are intended to shape Public Opin Ion and to prepare americans to placidly accept a drastic curtailment of those traditional rights for which our forefathers ought and in Man cases died. The psychological mechanism is intended to of crate thus if the majority is for this then who am i to disagree watch the papers and see if i alright. Expect to see a plethora of such articles in the coming weeks arid months to prepare readers for the orwellian future intended for a once free country. Every Soldier has sworn an oath to defend the Constitution. But How Many of the sol Diers Reading this letter will even writ their congressmen in its defense maj. Jared a. To present a variety of viewpoints on is sues affecting our society you should not be promoting a lifestyle that is prohibited by the United states department of de sense. Capt James p. Morgan Raf Chicksands England Pon t ask Don t print perhaps you can help me understand How articles Are chosen to be published in your newspaper. I certainly understand the need to present a wide variety of Arti eyes representing a Broad spectrum of the political social cultural economic and other environments. However i mus take Issue with your decision to print the article entitled the women s Side of sex Ual films sept. 11. I have no major objection to an article that explores women s taste in erotic or any other Type of films though i Don personally feel a discussion of erotic films is necessary or in Good taste. I under stand Many of your readers May be inter ested in this topic even though i am this article went beyond a re View of the differences in the erotic tastes of men and women and reviewed numer Ous films aimed at a homosexual Audi ence. I feel this is entirely inappropriate in a newspaper written for military Mem Bers and their families. I know that we Are in the Don t ask Don t Tell military and that Many in society Don t feel there is anything wrong with homosexuality. The Bottom line however is that homosexuality is not condoned in the military. I believe that imprinting an article reviewing homosexual movies you Are helping legitimize a life style at Odds with the current military View on this Issue. While your paper has a responsibility try out other Side i have been following the quarrel that has been going on about the subject civil Ian is. Military. The grass is always Greener on the other Side and i must admit that i have been thinking the same Way and kept looking Over to the other Side in both ways As a civilian and As a Soldier. It used to bother me As a civilian to see All the benefits the soldiers get i.e., health care housing housing allowance and i really understand How All the civil ians feel working Over Here in the ones who have been local hires who Don t get Home leave housing allowances or other benefits stateside hired civilians receive. But on the other hand it also used to bother me to see civilians receiving their Cash awards every year or seeing the civil ians working in the same capacity i Workin but i get those phone Calls or have to go do sergeant s time or just to keep it Short continue being a professional Soldier. Then i realized we Are All sitting in the same boat. We All have the same purpose arid goal serving our country to the utmost of our ability May it be As a civilian or As a member of the armed forces. I do believe we All do just that with Pride. As for those who envy the other Side i just have one recommendation if you Are civilian join the army. If you Are military get out of the army and become a civilian. Staff sgt. Rainer f. Steinbauer Frankfurt Germany commentary Cia has history of unintelligent errors by Scripps Howard news service the end of the cold War is proving no time for resting on laurels at the Cen trial intelligence Agency. First the Aldrich Ames spy Case an now Janine Brookner s scathing sex discrimination suit have thrown the Agency into turmoil exposing a culture infected with complacency and cover up. Ames you recall worked for the soviet Union from inside the Cia s operations directorate for nine years. His activities which Cost the lives of at least 12 East bloc agents went undetected despite a lavish lifestyle unaffordable on a government salary and a history of heavy drinking and undistinguished Job performance Ames arrest in february launched a painful self examination and Long overdue outside scrutiny at the spy Agency. The report submitted by the inspector general paints a portrait of an alcoholic temptress that former colleagues Greet with disbelief. Brookner s suit accuses the Cia of tolerating a pervasive atmosphere of machismo and sexual hers is not an isolated complaint. More than 100 women Are joining a class action suit alleging systematic denial of promotions and serious assignments in Covert operations. In a classified 1992. The Cia s proven Lack of rigor another areas the absence of penalties for counterintelligence failures for exam ple lends credence to these accusations. We re starting to agree with sen.
