Uniform and needed As i was Clearing out my Magazine rack of old stars and stripes i reread the letter by the Sailor who questioned the reason forthe american forces network having an information spot for air Force personnel and the Correct Wear of the uniform i agree one would think that a member would know what to Wear and How to Wear it properly. But my dear brother probably Yin t aware that the air Force uniform is going through some changes even som changes to make us look Navy. Now the newly nominated chief of staff has his Opin Ion of what he wants of the uniform and what you May see Are some different spot explaining a new Way. To be quite honest though some individuals Are routinely misinformed of what to expect. Maybe television is a partial solution. Hey you watched it. Master sgt. Leroy trusty Rhein main a Germany i promote Only the Best i would like to say just a few things about the military promotion system. I believe this system needs a serious updating of the Way i views people to be promoted. I believe you should promote the Best most qualified people the ones who have done the things that stand out above the rest. The military system believes it has to promote so Many women and so Many minorities. I am not a racist nor am against women in the military. I myself was once in the military. I do believe you should be promoted by what you have done with yourself in your military jobs they should not someone just because the person Hap pens to be a woman or a minority. This Only leads to backward discrimination. If two people go up for a Job one a minority and one a caucasian the Best Quali fied person should get the Job. I believe my husband fell into this situation. He is an outstanding noncommissioned officer. He works very hard tomake sure the soldiers Are taken care of. He maintains his military bearing. A his records and evaluations say to promote this outstanding Soldier. He has made Allis workplaces better and smoother run Ning ,. His Boss does not know Why he was promoted my husband does not know Why either. He knows people who were promoted who really did not deserve it. This system needs to be looked Overand changed to make sure the right ple do get promoted. My husband do snot complain nor do any other soldiers for fear of being labelled racist an woman hater. But i believe Many people would like the system to be changed maybe hot have the sex origin and race category on the forms. Let the soldiers be judged by what they have done with their military career. Commentary Christopher fakes Back seat to Garter by Mark Matthews Washington in the capital s Zero sum atmosphere the big loser in the Jimmy Carter Mission to Haiti is widely seen to be Warren Christopher whose Public stature hardly heeded another blow. / Only did the former president As sume a High profile negotiating role usually accorded to a Secretary of state but Christopher is depicted As having opposed the Mission he flatly denies that and aides say his chief pitch was to have a High Leve administration official along to spell out . Intentions to Haiti s dictators and not leave that Job up to Carter. But the fact that he was overruled even on that Point offers just the latest piece of evidence that his influence on policy and his relationship with president Clin ton Are less than anticipated when he joined the administration. No one expected a superstar when Clinton tapped the lawyer Diplomat then 67, for the nation s top foreign policy Job. But he brought other qualities that were meant to boost a Young president with no foreign policy experience entering uncharted Post cold War territory a Lustrous record As a negotiator a cautious steadiness decency and above All the president s Trust. Yet at two crucial moments on Haiti and earlier on North Korea Clin ton has turned to former president car Ter As a special envoy not to the Secre tary who when he himself worked for Carter had secured the release of Amer ican hostages in Iran after months of tortuous negotiations. The administration s foreign policy on a number of fronts has been anything but steady alarming allies with its unpredictability. V and on some key issues Clinton has overridden his Gray Eminence and accepted others advice. When Christopher returned from Europe in the Spring of 1993 after failing to persuade allies to support a lifting of the bosnian arms embargo and airstrikes against serbs he nevertheless believed that if the president took a Strong leadership role the allies would follow. But Clinton backed away from the plan leaning to the advice of among others his longtime Friend Strobe Tal Bott. V. Christopher opposed the Carter mis Sion to North Korea earlier this year arguing internally that the United state should stay on the course of seeking . Sanctions. And several months ago he also opposed granting a visa to Gerry Adams Leader of the Irish Republican army s political Wing because Adams had not yet renounced violence. For Christopher a skilled lawyer who carefully marshals his facts such setbacks Are surprising arid have disappointed some state department officials who expected him to be a More powerful Cham Pion. Part of the reason he has t is the flip Side of his character. While a dogged negotiator he s also a conciliator and consensus builder who keeps his own ego carefully in Check. And when a decision is made no one is a More Loyal spokesman As he was Friday in defending the Carter Mission. I think president Carter is a particularly great National resource. He s been used very effectively. And i did not oppose his Mission to Haiti Christopher told Abc s today program. His Courtesy is even More apparent in private undercutting reports of a bitter feud with National Security adviser an Thony Lake. Like Christopher Lake was a close wit Ness to past acrimony Between National Security advisers and secretaries of state and took his present Job determined to avoid it. But the severe drubbing the entire for eign policy team has received for a record of Clinton zigzags has taken its toll on the reputations of both men and prompted speculation of a major shake up when this kind of talk starts in Washington staffs often resort to Finger Point in Christopher s Case resignation talk is fuelled by his wooden television performance in the age of can statesmen. But it May be premature because Christopher later this year or Early next could still bring Home a Triumph in the form of an israeli syrian Deal that would drastically change the Middle East scene of his most dogged diplomatic efforts. Christopher s relationship with Clin ton who relied heavily on him in making Early appointments is something no one besides the two men can assess. The Secretary talks to the president frequently and often about subjects other than foreign policy. A key question is whether even the most trusted adviser can persuade this president to stay on a steady course.
