The stars and stripes Page 9abortion-breast cancer link by news Day a study of women younger than 45 suggests that those who have had an abortion have an increased risk of Devegh Oping breast cancer. The study done by researchers at the Fred Hutchinson cancer Center in Seattle looked at 1,806 women and found that induced abortion was associated with a 50 percent increased risk of breast cancer a in other words increasing a woman a relative risk Over a lifetime from a a a Normal Baseline of 1.0 to 1.5. This increased risk did not vary with the number of abortions or whether the women had a completed pregnancy. But it was higher if the abortion had been performed on women 18 or younger a increasing their risk 2.5 times. It also was higher in women who had an abortion at age 30 and older their risk Rose to 2.1. The risk for women 18 and younger was even higher if the abortion was performed after eight weeks gestation or if the woman had a family history of breast cancer although the numbers of women in both categories were Small. A no increased breast cancer risk was associated with miscarriage. Other experts however cautioned that the results of the study based on interviews with 845 breast cancer patients and 961 healthy women Are preliminary and that it is unclear what link there might be if any. A there Are hypothesis raising studies like this one published every Day. This would probably not even be covered except that its abortion and breast cancer a said or. Lynn Rosenberg who wrote the editorial accompanying the study to be published next week in the journal of the National cancer Institute. A on the whole other studies have found no relationship Between breast cancer and abortion a Rosenberg professor of epidemiology at Boston University a school of Public health also said an increased risk of 50 percent is relatively modest. A a a in epidemic logic terms its a very Small increase. In terms of the individual 50 percent is Small a she said. By comparison heavy smokers have a 3,000 per cent increased risk of getting lung cancer Rosenberg said. There Are few subjects More potentially incendiary than the possibility of a link Between abortion and breast cancer. For some time anti abortionists have been calling attention to epidemiological studies that have suggested women who had abortions were at higher risk of developing breast cancer. Quot it certainly has been no Surprise. That it abortion is physically a bad thing for the body a Robert Mcfadden Washington Bureau chief of the and hoc committee in defense of life an anti abortion group said recently. A a. The True connection has to become part of the debate Quot Hubble Telescope poses Riddle on age of universe Washington by new Day astronomers using the Hubble space Telescope have estimated that the universe May be billions of years younger than its oldest stars a a finding that has cosmologists scratching their Heads. That logical impossibility which is suggested by previous ground based observations As Well poses a serious Challenge to theorists. If the new data Are proved Correct in further observations either the accepted methods for calculating the Ages of stars Are wrong or the Standard big bang theory on the birth and evolution of the universe needs to be revised experts said wednesday. Either Way they said it is expected to be a Lively scene As scientists try to resolve what is being called astronomy so Page using the Hubble a precise measurement of the distance to a Remote Galaxy the new study calculates that the universe is anywhere from 8 billion to 12 billion years old depending on the amount of matter it contains. Last month another team of astronomers using a ground based Telescope in Hawaii reported an estimated age of 7 billion to 11 billion years. The problem some ancient stars in our Milky Way Galaxy and elsewhere have been calculated to be about 16 billion years old. The eagerly awaited Hubble findings were to be published thursday in the journal nature. They were discussed at a Nasa briefing wednesday. A team of scientists led by astronomer Wendy Freedman of the Carnegie observatories in Pasadena calif., used the Hubble to estimate the distance a 56 million Light years a to a Galaxy called m 100 in the Virgo Cluster. A Light year the distance Light travels in one year is about 5.88 trillion Miles. Accurate distance measurements Are crucial in calculating the size and age of the universe. If the Hubble findings Are confirmed and if the age estimates for ancient stars a based on How Long their nuclear fuels Burn a do not change then revised models of universe evolution May be needed scientists said. A it might Lead to a revolution actually in cosmology a said Alexei Fol Pipenko an astronomer at the University of California Berkeley. The quest for accurate determination of the age of the universe is one of the great goals of modern astronomy. The late Edwin Hubble a the space telescopes namesake a discovered in 1929 that the universe is expanding with far off galaxies receding from us at a Speed that is proportional to their distance from us. Critics of the new standards contend they dwell too much on the failings of democracy and too Little on its heroes and standards Are from a 271-Page Guidebook issued this week by the National Center for history in the schools at Urcla. The Guidebook was written by 30 classroom teachers with assistance from historians parents and Community leaders. The Guidebook is part of a National Campaign to establish teaching standards in All academic subjects and was developed with Grants totalling $1,390,000 from the . Department of education and the National endowment for the humanities. Lynne Cheney who headed the endowment during the Reagan and Bush administrations criticized the Guidebook last week As too negative about american society and too inclined to glorify contributions of women Blacks and other minorities. She complained that such heroes of science As Thomas Edison Albert Einstein and Jonas Salk Are not mentioned at All. A we Are a better people than the National standards indicate and our children deserve to know it a she said. Marshall Smith undersecretary of education said the Guidebook should be seen As a a starting a the imperfections inherent in a document of this nature will be sorted out.
