Mediterranean Algiers Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 30, 1943, Algiers, Algiers Sunday May 30, 1943 the stars and stripes Paupe 15jimmy Collins Likely to join baseball elect by Damon Runyon i suppose now that he has passed away Jimmy Collins one of the greatest third basemen who Ever wore created shoes will be Given place in baseball shall of Fame at Cooperstown n. Y., a distinction that was denied him during his lifetime. It would have brightened the old gentleman a last years no Little had he known his face and Fame were preserved in Bronze in that curious institution for i find elderly Ball players Are quite grateful for Public memory of their Youthful prowess. I have no quarrel with the selection of the 14 players of the Era since 1900 whose features Are perpetuated in Metal in the Hall. They were elected in a nationwide poll of the baseball writers association of America of which i have the Honor of being a member though never having cast my untrammelled ballot in this poll. But i am a Little sceptical about Many of the current writers who did vote for the a a immortals being old enough to have seen some of the Guys they voted for. Collins missed election to the Hall a couple of times though old timers who followed the game before and after the Era of 1900 say he belonged on the apocryphal ?Ta11-time? team of baseball history. The Only third baseman in the Hall of Fame is John j. Mcgraw and he was not a great third baseman. He was a great manager and it is on that basis he must have been elected. He was not As Good a third baseman As any one of a dozen others who have played that position and certainly he was not in Collins class. All time team the ?a11-time? team of the average observer of the game since 1900 would probably be made up of Hal Chase first Eddie Collins second Honus Wagner Short Jimmy Collins third Tycobb Tris speaker and babe Ruth outfielders Bill Dickey Catcher Christy Mathewson Walter Johnson Grover Cleveland Alexander de Walsh Carl Hubbell Napoleon Rucker arid dizzy Dean pitchers with Joe Mccarthy As manager of these Eddie Collins Wagner Cobb speaker Ruth Mathewson Johnson and Alexander Are in the Hall. The great Hal Chase magician of first base play will probably never get there but i think i find a Covert reference to him in the words on George Harold Sisler a plaque a a one of the Best two Fielding first basemen in the history of the whom could the other have been but Chase i agree too with the language of Honus Wagner a plaque a the greatest shortstop in baseball history a but it May be denied by old admirers of Joe tinker Maran Ville Bancroft Elberfeld and a score of other great Short fielders of another Day. However on All around ability batting Fielding base running and stamina i guess the flying dutchman was in a class by himself. I saw a Little of a Man years ago that i thought was a powerful player a first baseman who was probably a better Man than Chase bar the Fielding magic of the latter and who surely belongs among the baseball he was not Only a magnificent player but was at the same time a great manager. His name was Frank Chance. Grid to air i capt. Charles Erb now with the air forces in Hawaii is the same a a Chuck Erb who starred at quarterback on the University of California a wonder team in 1921-24. Erb hails from los Angeles. Connors elected new York the National association state racing commissioners elected Charles f. Connors. Of Massachusetts president succeeding Beverly Broun of West Virginia. New vice presidents Are Jerry Giesler California e. H. Williams Illinico and Chester f. Hockley All Star service lineup How would the pick of an army baseball team come out against the pick of the Navy Iii a War world series meeting the Navy line up would include Ball players who Are now in the marines and the coast guard. Here Are two line ups picked by it. Jim Mcarthur Navy officer giving the army player first first based Greenberg and Mize. Second base a Crespi and Reese. Shortstop a Travis and Rizzuto. Third base a Lewis and Pesky. Left Field a Reiser and Williams. Center Fields Joe dimag Gio and Dom Dimaggio right Fields Terry Moore and Max Marshall Catcher a Banning and Pytlak pitchers army a Beasley ruffing Hughes Mulcahy. Pitchers Navy a Feller Lyons French Olson. There is of course Little Chance to get these two teams together while the War is underway. But As it. Mcarthur writes a it might be played in the Yokohama City stadium As soon As possible. The chances Are that mayor Laguardia will be attending a big Tokyo fire. Also general Macarthur or Admiral Halsey might be prevailed upon to toss out the first Ball. Fifty percent less clubs Are operating in Wisconsin now than before the War but crowds generally have doubled in the surviving clubs. There is Only one dub operating in Pittsburgh the Home town of Corporal Billy Conn and Fritzie Zivic. Out of nine indoor shows staged in Pittsburgh this past Winter Only two were profitable while another broke o War is ready to enjoy loafing finale Man of War the greatest american race horse that Ever peered through a bridle has been retired from the stud at the age of 26 by his owner Bluff old Sam Riddle and will spend the remaining Days of his life just sort of loafing around a paddock in Kentucky. Never let anyone Tell you there Ever was another horse like Man of War. He was an Equine Thunderbolt. No one who did not see him run has any Conception of How he could a a turn it never mind the matter of time. It was the Way he won his races that staggered you. Horses such As the sensations of this Era whirl away and Al Sab could not have carried Man of wars water bucket so to speak. They have both been beaten by what the fancy Calls a a Nickel no hide of that calibre Ever got close enough to Man o War in a race to even breathe his Heel dust. He was beaten once in 21 starts and then the starter pulled the trigger on him when the a a red horse had his Hind Side to the Barrier. That defeat was a plumb Accident. Even so it was a life and death struggle for the Winner to get his nose Home in front of Man of War. No one knows How far or How fast this fellow could run or How much weight he could pack. He carried 138 pounds going a mile and a sixteenth As a Oliree year old in the Potomac at Havre de gras and 131 pounds in the Miller at a mile and three sixteenths at Saratoga. Bad temper he was a burst of red flame coming Down the stretch. He almost ran from under jockeys. He had a bad temper at the Post and transmitted it to most of the hundreds of sons and daughters he sent to the races in the 21 years he was in the stud. In retirement he attracted Many thousands of visitors to the Blue Gross just to gaze at him. On Joe Widener farm in Kentucky stands an enormous Bronze statue of a horse called Fairplay. It was erected mainly because Fairplay sired Man of War. Under a great slab of Stone nearby reposes the Bones of Mah ubah ii an obscure Mare most of her life who became a turf immortal As the dam of the big Bay Bill Mcgeehan once aptly called a the Golden Man of War is the Only horse that Ever remained a National figure after his racing Days were Over. He sired a raft of children but never another like himself. War Admiral foaled late in Man of wars career in the stud was the closest. He won the Kentucky Derby the Preakness and the Belmont americans turf a a triple class by himself crusader american Flag Bateau and scores of others of Man of wars get were famous names in racing but they were just horses compared with their old Man. He sired a Winner of England a grand National steeplechase in battleship. He was the Grandfather of sea biscuit. His mares have been in great demand of late years among breeders and through them he has established an Equine dynasty that should last for several generations to come. His offspring have won 3,007-967 dollars in purses which is said to be an All time record for an american sire though it is my impression it is exceeded by at least one stallion imported to this country sir Galahad Iii. It is Apt to be topped by another import Blenheim ii. Sire of whirl away the greatest Money Winner in history. Man of War himself was not a big Money Winner in his racing Days standing seventeenth on the american list but he raced Only in his two and three year old form and purses we Ere not As High then As they later became. But of the sixteen horses that top him not one could have kept within sight of his jocks colors in a race. There was Only one Man of War. Only one. His years equal about 70 for a human. He is reported still in excellent health but Sam Riddle apparently thinks he has discharge his full duty in the Parent business and is entitled to a rest though other Equine fathers and mothers too. Have been known to carry on Well beyond his age. New giant Ernie Lombardi. Who banged out hits for the Boston braves last year is now exhibiting his slugging prowess and equally famous Sehn Ozz with the new York giants. Red Ace Hopes to meet Rice new York a Feodosi Vanin. Russians greatest distance Runnel declares he is very eager to meet Greg Rice and other top speedsters in the United states there being no one in the soviet Union capable of giving him a Good race. Despite the War and with Little time for training Vanin on september 23, 1942, broke two soviet records and one world record. He ran 15 Kilometres in 48 00.8 and in another event broke the soviet record for 18 Kilometres. He recently set a new Mark of 1 03.51 for 20 Kilometres thereby breaking the record formerly held by Paavo Nurmi the legendary finnish Ace. When Miklos Szabo of Hungary cracked Nurmi a record a few years Back with a 1 04.02 timing Nurmi said he thought that it represented the limit of human endurance. Currently Vanin is training soviet army officers in skiing and Bayonet fighting. He strained Over 500 since the War began. Three champs loom for Feather division new York the featherweight boxing division now ruled by two men May become a class with three world champions. Willie Pep of Hartford agreed to defend the Crown against the Winner of a june 4 bout Between Chalky Wright of los Angeles and Phil Terranova of new York. Pep will sign for the fight june 5, three Days before he puts his title on the line at Boston against Sal Bartow. Massachusetts recognizes the Pep is. Bartolo Brawl As a title contest but the new York boxing commission does not. So if Bartolo wins he will be world Champion in Massachusetts and Pep will be Champ in new York. But the confusion does no tend Here. No matter who wins Jackie Callura of Hamilton Ontario will still reign As National boxing association is High on Cleveland s chances in 43 by Dan Daniel n. World Telegram new York a James Joseph Dykes the Chicago White sox manager May be Low in the american league standing but is As High As Ever in spirits. Says Jimmy ?1 done to even growl at the umpires anymore. Since my Gall bladder is gone i can stomach anything even that umpiring. A what had Dykes seen in the Western half of the american league was the question we put to James. A Well a said Dykes a a the Best club out this Way is Cleveland. Things May be different with the new Rabbit Ball but with the balata Pellet Lou Boudreau was Bunting All the time 1900 style and making it go. Lou himself Hasni to been hitting but that Denning is hot and is playing a Fine game around first base. There a a real Surprise. A a Hockett has been hitting too and with Cullenbine nursing a bad ankle Boudreau has been playing this Rookie Edwards in the Outfield. Done to pitch inside to this Guy hell murder it. Throw him that curve and he s not so Good. A Cleveland a pitching is Good what with Al Smith winning again but done task me How. There a one Guy who must do it with mirrors. Every time i sea him work in a tempted to go out and Bat. A a now that Johnny niggling of the Browns Knock your hat off either but he has something. His Knuckles drives our boys Daffy. Aside from niggling Luke Sewell Hasni to much in the pitching line and i can to see a serious Chance for improvement. Wakefield on Ball a the Best looking new player so far is Dick Wakefield the Detroit outfielder. The kid has plenty to learn about handling himself in the Field but at the plate he a Poison. He a a left handed hitter who drives everything into left. Against southpaws he Falls away yet loses no Jim a face brightened a a now take this Man Flores of the athletics who a won five games and beat the Yankees last sunday. Maybe the mexican a picked up something new. I knew him when lie pitched in the Pacific coast league where he hurled for los Angeles. He has a screwball and if you go after it while he keeps it Low hell drive you nuts. Make him come up with it and he a not so Good. Ill be delighted to see him again. In a also waiting for a Guy named Al Simmons. I want to see that old Woodburne drive those old pins again in left Over the doorway of the clubhouse flapped the no. 16 uniform of Ted Lyons now a Marine. The attached sign read a a Hung up for the Dykes pointed to the exhibit and said a loosing that old Marvel has turned out to to quite a blow. We can to make Many runs and we be no cleanup hitter. In fact in be abolished that designation. Our no. 4 Man is whoever happens to be left fielder that Day. However in a not squawking. In a just waiting for Joe Cronin and a real War won t kill pro Grid Elmer Layden the old notre Darner who found a great Chance to avoid cultivating a heart condition As a football coach by gamely consenting to take a 25,000 Dollar a year Job As commissioner of the National professional football league did no to say it in so Mary words but the impression persisted nevertheless that Layden did not expect professional football to have the Haggard time with manpower next fall such As professional baseball seems to be having now. In other words we will have a football season quite or As much so As is consistent with the demands of the selective service act. Layden said succinctly ?T?T4-f?Ts like me might be calling a half spinner j Over the what he really meant though i is that pro football by the very i nature of its calling possesses quite i a number of Good reliable deckhand who can wind up and put i a Crutch on a Baboon yet not come within the army s meaning of physical fitness. The y have re Mountable Knees ventilated eardrums from being coyly topped with a handful of Knuckles and maybe an occasional Case of double vision. Layden said ?1 think that the league will struggle through in a necessarily limited Way a being temperate As is his wont. Briefly the league now has 352 Active players in the armed forces against a Normal player personnel of 330. This year the limit is Clown to 225 players whereof Al Mast a Hundred Are in a deferred classification because of dependent wives and children. Another source of players was tapped last year when it was discovered that a player could retire from football a couple of years and still re urn to play competently. Like Ralph Buzz Lara who is in charge of the Chicago bears while George hulas is in the service stated a a our sport will be Good As other rationed things. You think meat and shoe rationing is All right done to you Well our football will be the
