Hathaway57-8085 Okinawa Bureau Okinawa 353 a Peak velocity of 132 Miles an hour As it Cut a wide Swath of destruction across the is land. Most of the Supply ships in the Harbor had been warned of the impending storm and had fled Okinawa leaving the Island with Only a scant week s Supply of food. Dam aged port facilities further hindered Relief after the storm had passed. However the army air Force immediately pressed into service 50 super fortresses which began flying emergency supplies to the 150,000 typhoon isolated troops. Observers on the Island reported that the wind whipped through the Oki Nawa valleys with such Force that it ripped Loose whole sections of sturdily built quonset huts and sent them hustling through the air at express train Speed. Scarcely a single hut on the Island escaped damage. Whole huts were lifted from their foundations and blown 20 to 30 feet along the ground. Nearly All tents were blown apart and the heavy driving rain which accompanied the typhoon drenched bedding clothing and personal effects. Shirts trousers jackets blankets half filled footlockers and boxes littered the entire Island As the wind reached Peak velocity. Early in the evening tents began to shred and As the typhoon stormed on soldiers took shelter in quonset huts until they too began to disintegrate in the fierce winds. Twisting Gir Ders and sheets of Iron spinning through the dark Ness created a further Hazard and Many of the troops sought Refuge in the Hills sheltering themselves in the hundreds of Okina wan ancestral tombs which Dot the Countryside. The tombs set deep into hillsides and constructed of Cement and Stone have open Ings leading into the burial vaults. The sounds made by the winds whistling past the Tomb openings were likened to the sound that might be made by giants blowing into the Mouths of empty bottles. Okinawa escaped damage. Advance warning of the storm Riad enabled the ground Crews to face the Craft into the storm. What damage was Dorie resulted from the Sud Flen shift in the direction of the wind. As soldiers battled the storm on the land the Navy was taking a beating in Okinawa s four japanese prison ers were reported to have been killed when a quonset hut sliding along the ground and pushed by the Force of the wind struck and crushed them. Late in the night the storm abated slightly then reversed itself and came roaring Back upon the Island As though not Content with the damage it had wrought before. Installations which had managed to survive the original onslaught went Down quickly before the wind Boming from a new direction. Strangely most planes on shallow Bays and harbours. Anchor chains and mooring lines were reported to have snapped like string. The morning after the typhoon 14 beached Craft could be seen from Naha. Sailors told of men being washed overboard with no Hope of Rescue. Married in Chapel. . Air Force photo u miss Margaret Ann Skinner Albuquerque . And sgt. John r.
