Southern France Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 13, 1945, Nice, Provence Alpes Cote d?TAzur The stars and stripes sunday May 13, 1945occupation of Germany constitutes a big Job Washington May 12 it apr the allies have smashed the nazi far machine but they still have a big Joto on their hands military control of the German people until a government has been set up which will not be a threat to world peace. What that Job will be like is shown by what happened in 1918. Six Days after the armistice a million Allied soldiers under Generalissimo Foch started moving into Western Germany. French. British belgian and american troops took Over Rhine Birdge Heads. The american third army. 240,000 Strong moved into the Coblenz sector. The Force was later reduced to about 17.000. General Pershing issued this order to the american army of occupation Miniers wore not oppressors Quot you come not As oppressors but simply As instruments of m Strong free government whose purposes toward the people of Germany Are be deficient. During your occupation the civilian population is under special safeguard of the Honor of the american army. Actions of pillage will be punished with the severest penalties. The rhenish people were notified that property and personal rights would be respected. Burgomaster other local utilities were operated by germans under supervision. Restoration of order was complicated by food riots political upheaval Industrial chaos strikes and the unemployment of hundreds of thousands of demobilized German soldiers. German food augmented by supplies from the allies was distributed by local authorities under Allied control. Strike activities were restricted and German soldiers were put to work repairing roads. Reich communities had not directly Felt the destructive Force of warfare. The War weary people were for the most part conciliatory toward the invaders. However Many Rhinelander turned sullen when the got word of the peace terms. Al Flag is prepared the late maj. Gen. Henry t. Allen commander of the american army of occupation said Quot a future occupation will find us better his report on our military government of the Rhineland was the foundation of the present Allied military government of occupied territories. There was constant agitation in Congress for the withdrawal of our forces in Germany even though the yanks and the Boche on the whole hit it off quite Well finally the Senate adopted a Resolution that the occupation army be brought Home and president Harding ordered the withdrawal Jan. 25, 1923.Soldier poets Praise mom on her Day As being their favorite girl of All time if i had not thought that Little thought or said that Little word. I Only know that suffering and pleasures very few have made me realize that i have lots of love for you. A pfc. Irving Hutter mail Cali. Demobilization Point Pian elicits various cd recites dear editor the army has kept Faith with its men. The partial demobilization plan is As fair it is humanly possible to make it fair. Of course Here and there some individuals May find that it has a seeming fault but in principle spirit and actual working it is a credit to our democratic army. Mandracia billboard. I am fully aware of the fact that no one plan devised by the army for demobilization of soldiers will meet with Universal approval. For the most part the Point system with its minimum requirement of 85 Points for discharge is a Good plan. There Are however a few features of it open to criticism. The plan is fair entirely so but not realistic. I feel that fairness and realism must needs be combined. Factories at Home will need to be re tooled for Gigantic peacetime production. This will require he services of Many specially skilled workers. Under the Point system Many of these skilled workers May be retained in service although there is a shortage on the Home front. On the other hand there May exist in the states a surplus of unskilled workers at this Date and Marseille show arc theater tas la Cane Biere for uniformed personnel Only Fita shows Dally at two hour intervals starting for me the whole wide world our daily thought some Good soul has set aside a Day to be observed just for mom our Joy and Pride that is the written word. A pvt. H. J. R. I believe that in the interest of fairness that some provision should be made to award Points to the combat Soldier Wao does not possess a purple heart for in a sense he is being penalized for his alertness or Good Fortune in escaping wounds.
