Or. Mitsuo Sugiura from the four dogs were hooked up by a tube system to function for a 20-year-old patient while doctors operated on his liver. The dogs livers were used for 55 minutes during a two hour opera Tion on Susumu Miyazawa in a coma from cirrhosis of the liver. Sugiura told a medical con Ference the operation was a Suc Cess. However the patient died a week later from peritonitis unconnected with the original ail ment. No blood mixture an autopsy showed the patient s liver had regenerated and there was no mixture of the patient s and the dogs blood. A mixture would have been fatal Sugiura said. Three of the dogs were still Liv ing he operation was performed oct. 21 by a team of Tokyo univer sity doctors directed by prof. Seijos Kimoto.
