The answer is a rather simple one. Most lenses on cameras Enlargers or projectors now Bear a thin hard coating of magnesium fluoride to reduce surface reflections and thereby reduce flare Light and spots. Pictures made with coated lenses Are improved in that they have better contrast and More detail in the shadows. In addition the shadows in color slides have better color purity Back and Cross lighted scenes Are easier to photograph and flare from internal reflections within the Lens barrel is eliminated or considerably reduced. Coating slightly increases the Speed of a Lens having Many Glass air surfaces. More of the Light that forms the image is transmitted but less Flure Light is produced. This has the effect of increasing the image Quality in the highlights and of decreasing flare Light in the shadows. When All the elements of a slide or movie projector Are coated the screen brilliance is increased by As much As 50 per cent. The projected picture purity is also improved. Coated lenses can be identified readily by the slight purplish tint observed by reflected Light. The coating does not appreciably affect the color of transmitted Light As seen by looking through the Lens. Dirt on coated lenses tends to cancel tie advantages of coating. Oil spots look like holes on the surface. But care should be taken in cleaning coated lenses. Only soft Lens tissues and in some cases liquid Lens cleaner should be used. The use of silicone treated Lens tissues should be avoided As they will add to the coating thickness impairing its anti reflection function. Photographers who use Flash bulbs in any great Quantity willbe pleased to hear of the new general electric Agall Glass lamp. This tiny bulb is a Mere 1% inches High and % of an Inch in diameter but it has sufficient Light output for properly exposed Pic Tures in simple cameras at average distances. The tiny Flash bulb which will sell for 10 cents each has no Metal base but boasts instead a grooved Glass underside which will adapt eventually to Multi lamp clips. These clips will allow rapid fir ing of Flash bulbs in cameras of the future. The Light output of the a bulb is 7,000 Lumen seconds for the Clear lamp and 4,000 Lumens four a similar bulb with Blue tinted Glass for use with color film Daj Dight. The Clear lamp is color corrected for Type f Flash color film and Koda color. The a will give a synchronization at All shutter speeds and will doubtless attract professional As Well As Amateur photographers. The Radical new design of the a lamp will require some tall thinking on the part of Flash Holder and camera designers. The Peculiar base of the a has a Flat Glass terminal with a Small Groove on each Side and two thin wires exposed at the end. The lamps will be packaged in a simple plastic strip to serve As a Cartridge holding six or More lamps neither cameras to hold the new bulbs nor the bulbs themselves Are available yet. However it is expected that both will appear on the Market by april. 1. T the stars and stripes Goren on Bridge neither vulnerable. South deals. South holding 22 Points opened with two no Trump and North raised to three. The opening Lead was the six of Spades and East played the ten. South won the trick and being in the right Han for it lazily drifted into the club finesse. East won and continued the Jack of Spades. Declarer ducked but the suit was continued and cleared. Since South could not bring in enough tricks without trying the diamonds the finesse had to be essayed and West got in to Cash the setting tricks. A simple precautionary measure would have rendered the hand Safe against any holding. It should have been apparent to Declarer that the Diamond finesse was not essential to the Success of the contract. Three diamonds three clubs two Spades and Aheart add up to three no Trump. The danger in the hand of course lies in the possibility that West will establish a certain number of Spado tricks and run them. But the Only card that West can use effectively for Quick entry is the King of diamonds if he has it. Extraction of that card will Ren Der him completely impotent. The proper play is the immedi ate Lead of the Ace of Diamond followed by the Queen with com plete indifference As to who wins it. When the Spade is returned it is ducked and the suit will be cleared but now the club finesse can be taken with Complete safety because East will have no More Spades to Lead to his part Ner. If he should have one left it will mean that West originally had Only four and the opposition can Cash no More than two tricks in Spades plus the two Kings. Extracting the opening Leader s entry card is far More vital than taking an Early finesse. Copyright 1959, Tho Chicago Triton sunday february 15, 1959
