Observe and West collaborated today to defeat a contract that seemed impregnable. Against the final four hear contract West led the King of diamonds. East followed wit the Deuce and it is the Lead at trick two that makes or break the defense. West knew that his partner held a trick from the fact that he had raised and further that he had not asked for a continuation of diamonds. Now if East s trick were the Ace of Spades it would be important Tocash tricks in that suit before Declarer got rid of them on the Dummy s clubs. If however the Ace of clubs there would be no Way to defeat the hand except by obtaining a club Ruff. West finally decided on the club shift reasoning that unless East had Dummy s suit stopped he would probably have played a higher Diamond asking West Tocash another trick in that suit. Declarer covered West s five of clubs with the King from Dummy and now East had to decide whether it was a Singleton or double ton. There was no sure Way to Tell but East decided to Plait for a double ton and accordingly refused the first trick. He. Figured that if it were a single ton West would probably have cashed a second Diamond before shifting to clubs so that East would not be tempted to return a Diamond. Declarer was now helpless. If he Drew Trumps the defense would dash the Ace of clubs and two More diamonds. If he tried for a third round Ruff of a Dia mond in Dummy West would a in and Lead club for the Ruff.
