The rallies held each Spring and fall for fellow ship and spiritual enlightenment already have been held i Nuernberg Stuttgart Augsburg an Munich. Guest speaker at those meetings and at the remainder of the rallies in the Southern area was mrs. J. R. Mclaughlin trustee of rust College Holly Springs miss. Daughter of a methodist minister mrs. Mclaughlin studied at Baker University in Kansas. In 1952, following the death of her husband she earned master of arts and doctor of education degrees at new York University. She has taught at Pfeiffe College in North Carolina and Fairleigh Dickinson University in new  1963 she married the Rev. John r. Mclaughlin general Secretary of the commission on Chap Lains of the methodist Church. She spends much time travelling with her husband counselling Chap Lains wives and protestant women. Guest speaker in the Northern area is mrs. Rut Youngdahl Nelson wife of the Rev. Clarence t. Nelson pastor of the evangelical lutheran Church i Geneva Switzerland no newcomer to the proc she was the feature speaker in the 1959 and 1961 rallies and last Spring was the keynote speaker at the 12th annual training conference in Berchtesgaden Germany. She also protestant women Host rallies in five european countries mrs. Mclaughlin methodist educator. To tour Southern rallies. Has travelled twice around the world speaking Inmany countries. Mrs. Nelson holds a Bachelor of arts degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and has done graduate work at the University of Minne Sota. She has written several books including where Jesus walks and in 1954 was elected Mother of the year in Washington . Her two sons Are lutheran pastors and her two daughters also Are Active in Christian work. One is the wife of a missionary in Indonesia and theother is program director for the Christian action ministry in Chicago. They Are important but you should expect More from your school if your child is to become a Well rounded individual says a new guide to parents on evaluating the Job the schools Are do it is a publication of the National education association Nea called How Good is your child s school issued As a record 50 million children from kindergarten through High school went Back to classrooms. Nea gives the title the seven Cardinal principles to the Best known and most widely accepted set of purposes of american  Are health command of fundamental processes including the three r worthy Home membership vocational guidance effective citizen ship worthy use of Leisure time and ethical Char Acter. In turn it lists some common misconceptions which May cause parents to make a less than valid appraisal of  include saying that the Way i was taught is the Beltway. That s not How it was in my Day. When in fact there Are Many new tools for teach ing. The school staff is at fault if the school does not measure  Nea says that school administrators and teachers May be aware of their schools weaknesses yet be helpless to make improvements because of shortage of  my child s school is accredited it is an excellent  this is not always True Nea says because a school could live up to minimum accreditation standards and still fall Short of excellence. My child s school must be Good because it students stand High in National  when Stu dents score High in such examinations As the National Merit scholarship qualifying test Nea says it May show Only that the school has helped them to succeed in academic work in College but preparing youngsters for College is Only one aspect of education. I know it s True because i read  if a Story about the school your child attends worries you seek answers in the school itself. Make an appoint ment with the principal or other appropriate staff member and take a clipping of the Story with  sure if the child s having trouble learn ing that he s in Good health not bothered wit poor vision or hearing or Low physical Energy. Once these blocks Are out of the Way what does Parent look for in a school make Advance arrangements with the teachers to visit your child s classroom. As you watch ask yourself Are the pupils Active and involved Dothe teachers do most of the talking or do they stimulate the children to do much talking an thinking do the pupils seem to like their teach ers and feel relaxed with them is the entire class working on the same assignment or Are some working in groups or independently group ing is one method by which teacher give specialized attention to various  the teachers have Access to and use some of the new tools available to educators such a projectors audio and video tape recorders do the teachers encourage Young skills most teachers consider parents their partners Nea says. So parents Are encouraged to works volunteers become Active in the Pat attend school lectures and read the school publications.
