Arbogas Washington a grow ing frustration Over the War i Vietnam is reported by House members to be the dominant feeling to their constituents. The Prospect of increasing taxes and crime and rioting also Are weighing heavily on the minds of voters. Interviews with a Cross Section of democratic and re publican House members Indi Cate that concern Over the con duct of the War is the biggest Issue. Back from a two week Vaca Tion they reported mounting feeling that the United state should act to win the War quickly or pull out of political significance of the unrest was interpreted Dif Ford fervently by the two party Lead ers in the House. Rep. Carl Albert of okla homa democratic Leader appeared surprised that the president is not in nearly As much trouble As i thought Vietnam is the no. 1 is sue Albert said. There is a sense of frustration about the War. I found Little talk about taxes but a lot of people Are worried about the rioting and there was some criticism of the poverty program and con Cern Over farm . Gerald r. Ford of Mich Igan the Republican Leader said i have never seen an administration in such the people Are concerned about Vietnam and Are frustrated about the Way the War is being waged Ford said. There is grave concern about crime and disregard of the Law and Strong opposition to a tax rep. George w. Andrews d-ala., said the chief concerns of his constituents were the War taxes crime and rioting in that the people want this War Over with he added. I found the War and the Prospect of a tax increase to be the chief concern in my District said rep. Donald j. Irwin a Conn. Other voter reaction As reported by House members included rep. Frank t. Bow a Ohio generally the people Are Dis Turbed As to what is going onion Washington taxes spending and the War in Vietnam. I found some people Are changing their minds. Some now want to get out of Vietnam although they did not before. And those who favor our being there feel that we ought to be doing More an putting on More pressure. The people Are upset about crime particularly riots in major rep. W. R. Poage a Tex civil disorders and Domestic problems generally were prob ably Foremost on the minds of the people i represent. They generally Are opposed to in creased welfare spending and great society programs. Of course Vietnam was of major concern to rep. Chet Holifield a Calif taxes and proposals to boost them were uppermost in the minds of most californians. And naturally the Vietnam Waris a concern to everyone but not the top topic of discussion at the rep. John j. Rhodes a Ariz the people Aren t Happy about Vietnam and a tax increase. They think we ought to go in and win the War Orget rep. Samuel s. Stratton,. The people of course Are concerned about Vietnam and the feeling is general that we should increase our military Effort to win or else get out.
