Why 1901, publishers newspaper Syndicate the stars and stripes Canada s color to on Page 23 of your aug. 26 edition Yon stated that German has joined the ., Japan and great Britain As the fourth Mem Ber of the color to club. In the interest of accuracy May remind you that the Canadian broadcasting corporation began color broadcasting on a regular basis in september 1m6? a. W. . Canada has had color to since september 1986, on two networks from coast to coast. Cpl. A. F. Schmid Baden Soellinger there have been two recent articles in the stars and stripes announcing the introduction of color television in Germany. Ono of them stated that Germany was the fourth after the .,Japan and Britain. I would like to Point out with considerable Pride tha Canada is a member of this club. You have Many Canadian readers throughout Europe. I am cer Tain that they would like to read of our Progress occasionally and perhaps it might be Good to do an article on Canada s Centennia year. John a. Archibald Squadron Leader Craf editor s note we invite you to subscribe to the stripes Home delivery service. On March 9 we ran a Center spread entitled Canada s expo 67" on Jane 11 we carried an eight Page in depth piece Canada the fair and the country and on aug. 2 we devoted a fall Page to Montreal s fabulous Moder Boosing exhibition called habitat 67." negro comic strip it s been observed lately that rioting is about the Only Way for negroes to get noticed and to have their every real social prob lems examined and understood. This appears to be True of the stars and stripes As Well. As i look through the paper i see that most photographs of negroes relate to crime and riot whether before during or after the fact. So the visual image presented to the Reader is one of violence. But More impressive to me is the comic strip. The comics Are i suspect the most widely read part of the newspaper. You can read about animals knights of old air Force pilots Middle class working girls teen agers Hillbillies and Good old Charlie Brown. But they re All Lily White so the image the Reader gets child or adult is that eve this part of the world is White and to be nonwhite is to be wrong. The negro child feels an outsider and this is the Point of the 1954u.s. Supreme court desegregation decision and the White does t know How the rest of the world lives. Unless he forms opinion from Ching Chow or Pogo. Therefore i d like to suggest that if there is such a thing As comic strip which attempts to Deal realistically with what it is like to be negro the prides As Well As the problems that though twill be Given to including it when you next revise your comic pages. I m not sure there is such a comic strip but if there in to there ought to be one maj. Franklin Drucke Wiesbaden editor s note in response to oar query in behalf of the writer the stripes new York Bureau replies that As far As can be determined no major Syndicate distributes a comic strip with negro characters. However if such a comic strip is developed and subsequently syndicated stripes will certainly give it consideration. American express i would like to know exactly what status american express enjoys in ats dealings with the military. In the Amelco office in Kaiserslautern the service is sofar under Par that it would t be tolerated in a stateside Bank. Each Teller at a window it seems cannot make a transaction without Hunting Down the manager wherever he is. The travel counter is so poorly staffed that a Long wait is Standard procedure before getting any service the whole atmosphere of the establishment seems to be if you Don t like it Here where else do you think you can go the american express company has a monopoly in the military banking system of Europe and what they need is a healthy taste of Competition. Why does the government have such a paternal feeling for this company even to the Point of allowing Amelco to use the message Center facilities for delivery of monthly ban statements spec. 5 Michael Adam Kaiserslautern editor s note american express Frankfurt replies the american express company inc. Was designated by the Treasury department to operate banking facilities at various Mili tary locations. Details concerning the procedures governing the establishment and operation of banking facilities can be found in army regulation 210-135. In most instances the expenses incurred by Banks in providing banking facilities exceed the income derived from the operation and the net Cost excess of expenses Over income is offset by the maintenance of Treasury balances with such Banks. The use of the message Center assists in reducing the expenses. We have always welcomed corrective criticism As it affords us the Opportunity of improving cur service and the managers of our various offices will be glad to answer any specific queries. To. D. Stuart vice president facility offices Europe tuesday september 19, 1967
