George Eberl nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandeya Signet Twenty years ago India declared its Independence. For the510 million people living in India it has since been an Uphill Battle against faulty government planning drought flood famine an disease. Last August India s prime minister Indira Gandhi with irony told her countrymen we Are in deep two years of drought have caused such severe Grain shortages that Only massive imports of food have staved off full scale Markandeya uses understatement and a simple narrative approach in describing the poverty stricken lot of Village India and the attitudes of a people toward a land that has denied so Many so Little for so Long. It is not a protest novel and there Isa minimum of philosophizing. What she does present to the West Ern Reader is a Basic insight into elementary principles of vedic philosophy that have enabled her people to not merely endure but prevail Over a Long history of human suffering. Nectar in a Sieve also gives the Western Reader a dra Matic sociological account of the conflicts and attitudes growing out of the split Between Village India with its traditional centuries old customs and Urban India restless educated and International in this account of a simple peasant woman married As a child Bride who sees one of her sons die from starvation her daughter become a prostitute another son beaten to death Markandeya does not preach bitterness. She implies that it is Only through acceptance As opposed to resignation that Man is capable of prevailing Over his misfortunes and the benign indifference of nature toward human suffering. Life she says is passive and in the final analysis it is Man who must give it meaning. The novel is a moving drama written from the heart and to the Point.
