Mcauley. Father Mcauley is executive vice president of Marquette univer sity and he happens to believe in the integrity of honouring a con tract. In this regard father Mcauley differs from Ai Mcguire the basketball coach at Marquette. Mcguire wanted to get out of his five year contract to accept the position of head coach of the Milwaukee entry in the National basketball  Mcguire in t a villain alone in this popular pastime of con tract jumping. Other coaches of renown have been guilty of such action. The most notable who come to mind immediately have been Bowden Wyatt who reneged after one year on a new 19-year Mcguire Wyatt Dietzel Saban contract at Wyoming to go to Arkansas Paul Dietzel who deserted Louisiana state in the Middle of a contract to go to army and then abandoned the cadets in favor of South Carolina and Lou Saban who departed Maryland posthaste for a pro football Job at Denver in a situation paralleling Mcguire s. Other schools gave in however while the other schools have been distressed Over such defections they have not fought the Issue too diligently. In the end they have knuckled under to the demands and released the culprits. Marquette put its foot Down emphatically. We cannot conceive of any less appropriate time than the present to discuss Al Mcguire s availability father Mcauley told the associated press when Mcguire forced the Issue. Marquette was preparing for its appearance in the National collegiate athletic association basketball championships when Mcguire submitted his request for release. The irony of the situation is that Mcguire is working under the precise conditions he demanded when he talked contract conditions with Marquette  recently As last year coach Mcguire insisted that a five year contract was desirable to assure the full realization of his Hopes and plans for Marquette basketball father Mcauley said. We met All the terms of his contract including the salary he requested. We stressed that a Long term contract imposed restrictions on both  insisted on the Security of a five year arrangement knowing we intended to hold him to the terms of the contract. As far As Weare concerned Al Mcguire is our coach now and will be our coach next year father Mcauley , Here we Are confronted with a situation in which a Man is granted everything he demands and Given it in Good Faith by on of America s outstanding universities Only to have him prove that that Good Faith is one sided by trying to renege on his  the system is outmoded in this Era of thoughtless Promise amid the mad dash for recognition but we happen to come fro the old school which teaches the value of a Man s word once Given it is adhered to to the nth degree. Ethics forgotten word it seems to us that ethics has become a forgotten word that the Vogue is to grab whatever comes one s Way making any Promise to get it. And if something More interesting comes up the next year take it. After All it s Only a Promise and words Are cheap naturally a contract should he a two Way  All know that Many colleges Haven t been exactly above Board in their dealings with the coaches All the time. How Man coaches have been let out with a year or More to run on Multi year contracts because they bad the misfortune of running into Abad year we feel there is a different aspect put on the situation when College lets a Man go than a Man deserting a College because the coach generally in t  these situations arise the coaches Aren t left holding the bag. Generally the colleges buy up the remaining years of the contracts and the coaches Are Hurt Only to the extent of Pride not in the Billfold. The colleges wind up paying on two contracts i these cases.
