The 11-Day period until may28 remained a mystery. Ray seemed to have disappeared completely. So far As is known the British authorities Huncov 1952 mugshots show four stages Mac my Mimbu of of Ray s life and times in prison from left Joliet Miami and twice in Jefferson City to. Ered no clue As to his whereabouts or activities. did surface May 28, when he obtained a room in new Earl s court hotel in Peny wern Road As a o n and he surfaced june 1, pictorially at least in Ottawa where the Young mounties had already sifted through thousands upon thousands of passport applications. The Man inthe passport photo wearing Horn rimmed spectacles appeared much More dignified than the mugshots of burglar and armed robber James Earl Ray. But there was no question about it now. James Earl Ray had obtained. A passport in the name of Ramon George the search shifted into High gear As authorities moved to track Down Ray s further move ments. And in London on june 4, a Man wearing sunglasses and Blue suit and physically resembling James Earl Ray entered the trustee savings Bank in the Fulham District. Said ban manager Alan Perkins the Man was about 40 5 foot 10inches tall Brown hair he had a gun and handed a Teller a not saying give me he was Given 60 pounds in 5 Pound notes which comes to $144 in . Money. There was ample evidence according to a qualified and knowledgeable source that the robber was James Earl Ray. The note had a fingerprint that was shown conclusively to be Ray s. Interest in contacting White mercenary forces in Africa apparently brought Ray present ing himself As Sneyd to Tele phone Ian Colvin London daily Telegraph writer seeking information. He peeped out of his wind Wand when she brought him a message or came to his room he stood behind the door. She had the impression he was Al ways listening for someone in the hallways. He stayed in his room and Toher knowledge never left it for More than 20 minutes at a time. There were four Telephone Calls for him. Two it was later ascertained came from an air line regarding postponed flights to West Germany. The other two no one so far As is known knows. He made at least one know Telephone Call. It was to Ian col Vin again. Colvin said that if Sneyd wrote him a note he would Send him the address of Contact in Belgium for possible recruitment As a was on june 6. The morning of june 8, Ray checked out of the. Pax hotel and headed for Heathrow air port. He had a ticket for Bea flight 466, departing at 11 50a.m. For Brussels. Friday january 24, 1969 by the Man who would kill was in jail in Dalton ga., when he made this he was Flat broke when he escaped april 23, 1967,Ray managed to move around easily and spend Cash for every thing. Almost All of what was spent was shelled out in the 11months, until the Day of King s slaying. In that time it i known Ray managed to clothe feed and House himself he trav eled to Montreal then birding Ham where he bought a ear for$1,995 then Mexico then Cali fornia then a round trip to new Orleans then Atlanta birding Ham and Memphis. He spent close to $750 for dancing lessons and at a bar tending school. He put 19,000 Miles on the Mustang in less than eight months at a operating Cost of about $1,000. The speculation that he was hired gun rests on the Assumption that All this coming to per haps $10,000was paid for by people who wanted King out of the Way. Would they risk paying the ills for a Man who took nearly a year to do the Job would the Start out figuring it would take nearly a year and by doing that risk that their hired gun might be tripped up accidentally begetting arrested for being drunk or going through a Stop Light or identified by an sex con vict turned informer after april 4, in the period of flight Ray so far As is known went to Atlanta where he abandoned the car Toronto London Lisbon and London again. The trans Atlantic flight Cost $319.50. Of. A round figure of $20 a Day he May have spent a additional $1,200. One theory was that Ray might have returned to old Hunt ing grounds in Illinois on july14, 1967which would be nearly nine months before King was slain and participated in the the stars and stripes $22,000 robbery of the Bank Ofallon. Two men wearing stocking masks one carrying a Shotgun and the other a pistol held 18bank employees and customers at Bay. The Man with the Pisto scooped the Money from two tellers cages overlooking four other drawers full of Cash. This has been interpreted by some theorists As a Ray Type of goof. The men escaped through Arear door opening onto a Park ing lot. There were no witnesses to the getaway. In the Huie Ray chronology Ray apparently was in East St. Louis close to Alton on that Day there s no evidence that Ray robbed it says capt. John Light of the Alton police. It re Mains unsolved. No one saw the getaway car at Fred Wilkinson director of Missouri s department of corrections offered a description Ofray thai could hardly be inter that he tvs a hired gun rests on the Assumption that All this coming to $10,000 tvs paid for by people Tho wanted King out of the pretend As the definition of a lever decisive criminal. He was innocuous says was the sort of prisoner you would rarely notice. If he was in a group of prisoners you were talking to about prison conditions you d never hear from him. He was the sort we describe As being involved in at Tention arresting events rather than As a troublemaker. Some prisoners who fit that description slice their wrists or Cut their Achilles Tendon or they doas Ray did they hide How did Ray come to usernames of living canadians All residents of Toronto and All int least vague ways physically resembling Ray John Larry Ray says he hear somehow that there was a con vict from Missouri state Peni captured in Canada and came Back. He was sent to Jef City says John Larry. Any How if Jim was going to Canada there must be a Grapevine up there All these underground places got different things. If i was pulling 20 and got out i do to Wilkinson knows of no such event or prisoner. If the Grapevine supplied the names of gait Paul Bridgman and Ramon George Sneyd it i entirely possible they were obtained when Ray was believe to have first been in Canada Al though there is no reason to Dis count the possibility that he got them while still in prison or i Mexico or on the Loose after breaking out. What about the other aliases Ray was also known As Harvey Lomyer James Mcbride James Walton w. C. Her Ron and James o counter. In Bow Street court in Lon Don on june 27, there was an Exchange bet Wen Ray and his British counsel Roger Frisby which would be unusual in the United states at such an extradition hearing. It went like this Frisby did you know mar tin Luther King personally Ray no Frisby had you Ever met him Ray no Frisby have you any kind of grudge against him .1" Ray no Frisby conversationally did you kill Martin Luther King Hay no Post 13
