Up Lloyd Mangrum one of professional Golf s big three of the 1940s and 50s along with Ben Hogan and Sam Snead died of a heart attack saturday at his Home. The 59-year-old former . Open Champion who retired from professional Golf in the late 1950s, had a history of heart seizures. He s survived by his widow Eleta and three grown children. Mangrum who won 37 major Golf championships during his two decade career was named to the pea s Hall of Fame in 1964. The Texas born pro finished sixth in his first tournament in 1936 but within four years had captured a half dozen lesser tourneys and finished second in the celebrated masters championship in 1940. By 1941, at age 27, Mangru was ranked just behind Ben Hogan Sam Snead and Byron Nelson among the nation s leading golfers. Two years later he was inducted into the army and sent to France. Suffering a broken shoulder in 1944, Mangrum was told he might never again play winning professional Golf but he was discharged in 1946 and within six months had captured the . Open championship the biggest win of his career. The win came during a dramatic double playoff with Byron Nelson and Vic Ghezzi.
