Cris Aguilar Nuremberg Germany needling i have been an employee of the . Air Force for about 18 years. In All this time i have noticed when Reading the stars and stripes the negative and prejudicial attitude of your paper to Ward Italy. I am very surprised that a paper like yours that pre tends to be impartial and whose Job should be to inform american troops in Europe without any discrimination toward race or nationality conducts in my Opin Ion denigrating Campaign to Ward Italy and italians insinuating in a very Clever and obscure manner that Italy is Only the country of dirt scandals mafia Cosa Nostra Etc. I ask myself if it is possible that your correspondent or your Man in charge of editing news from Italy receives Only the worst of whatever happens Here. If i were not an italian and i were not a Little interested in politics i would gain from your paper the impression that Italy is Only the country of scandals Etc. I do not know your age or your degree of education but i must remind you that Italy which was the Cradle of Many illustrious men in All the Fields Only 30 years ago found it self Defeated though not for Lack of valor and that this same country completely destroyed morally and economic ally with All its faults and crimes your paper is always reporting made itself a peace with dignity and Honor among the most progressive countries of Europe. I ask myself if in Germany where you print the paper there Are no scandals or criminal acts or Only Beautiful scenery and Rivers of Good Beer and if so i ask you please to Stop humiliating us in front of the readers of the stars and stripes or at least be impair Maietta Aviano Italy Lucky this letter is a comment to the letter written by the tech sergeant s wife from we Bruec Ken who s glad to be Here. Glenn Burns Ansbach Germany policies on jobs regarding the article we could t make it anymore on i pays a sept. 29 about a wives working in German Facto Ries i would like to say some thing. It seems to me the army has two ways. I am a . Dependent but Ger Man. I did work for the . Army until 1966 then i went to the Usa and worked in Maryland As a bookkeeper and payroll clerk. When i came Back to Germany i found out that the finance com Pany needed somebody and i applied for the Job. After this i found out i can t have the Job be cause i am not . The army says the jobs Are for germans now. I would like to find out what is the truth and what you have to do to get a Job. Would you also explain to me what is understood by . De pendent i thought this is every body who is married to a . Soldier. Seems i am wrong. Renate a. Monreal we Bruecken Germany editor s note a. Heath assistant chief Public affairs Usa eur said for filling Job vacancies Dod defines a dependent As . Citizen who is either the spouse or other member excluding children Over 20 residing with a military member or civilian employee in Noncitizen May be considered for employment in local National positions Only in accordance with Host country requirements. As for what you have to do to personally qualify for a Job we suggest you Contact your local army civilian person Nel office for i feel it s Only right to let the people know what s going on with the women in the army today. I have women working for me As switchboard operators who i feel Are mature and capable of doing and Are doing a very Fine Job. Though there Are problems which exist. To give you a few examples unwritten policies by some wac detachment com Manders dual policies of some wac detachment commanders and companies which the wac is assigned to for duty no consideration taken by wac detachment shift work some wac commanders thinking they should know whose family the wac visits on weekends or break Between shifts. I could go on and on. Lack of living space a wac cannot uti Lize unoccupied bunks while an other wac is on leave or not utilizing her bunk. Why policy and yet Short on bunks. My opinion is that command ers and their counterparts should get together and get the said and unwritten policies together. This Way it would be More bearable and More enjoyable for the women in the army Europe to perform their assigned duties harmoniously and have an enjoy Able place to work and live. Most was Are attached to wac detachments and assigned to companies for duty and As , you was out there till someone gets their stuff together grit your Teeth and Bear it. Edward Germany Russell Baker Washington not since the country is probably beyond Shock by this time there can be no harm in telling the truth at last about the first thanksgiving Day. It began As everyone knows when Myles Standish sent John Alden As a surrogate proposer to Priscilla Mullins. Standish at that time was the most important Man in Massachusetts. In fact he was widely known As the Teddy of the South being such an important Man he naturally did not want to be come personally involved in competitive activities such As asking a woman to marry him because he believed this would be bad for his image As a Man above partisanship. Moreover he was terrible at asking women to marry him. There was something about the look in his eyes said the women to whom he had proposed some thing about that look that made women think he was the kind of Man you would t buy a used Blunderbuss from much less marry. Standish had proposed too Many times and been rejected by so Many women that he was widely known As the Hubert Humphrey of the Puritan and so when he sought Priscilla s hand in marriage he decided to stand above the proposal and Send John Alden As a surrogate. Standish did not Trust Alden however. It was not his custom to Trust Many people. He particularly distrusted Priscilla. That was Why he wanted to marry her. Once they were married stand ish reasoned he could have her in the House where he could keep an Eye on her. Before sending Alden to pro pose Standish called in the canny old Indian j. Edgar Squanto and ordered him to have two of his Best braves keep their ears to the ground outside Priscilla s place and make a re Cord of everything that was said. When Alden arrived he was three hours late for the appoint ment because of Standish s aides had deliberately Given him the wrong address in order to make him look foolish. I see Why they Call you the Massachusetts Bay Muskie said Priscilla. Will you marry Myles stand ish asked Alden. Marry him asked Priscilla. I would t even buy a used Blunderbuss from Alden went and for Good Rea son. He knew that Squanto s braves would immediately re port his failure to Standish. The consequences could be terrible. The fierce Warrior cols onto might appear without warning in the residence of Alden s grand Mother and walk Over the frail old lady out of Devotion to Myles Standish. In his misery Alden was too crushed to say no when Priscilla asked him to marry her. To his Surprise Alden found Myles Standish in Happy spirits when he went Back to report How the proposal had gone. What a loser you Are stand ish laughed flipping through a personnel dossier provided him by j. Edgar Squanto. No won Der they called you the Yankee surveillance reports said Standish showed that Priscilla often stayed up All night Long going from door to door to denounce the government. Standish Felt so Good about his narrow escape from the marriage that he decided to hold a great party of thanksgiving. There would be roast Turkey stuffed with chestnuts he said. And Cranberry sauce and candied yams and mince pie smothered in heaping Mounds of whipped Cream Standish said. On thanksgiving Day John and Priscilla found themselves seated Well below the Turkey not to mention the Cranberry sauce the Gravy the celery the olives the Pepper and the Salt. Priscilla was so outraged at Standish s treatment of her Hus band that she told John no wonder they Call you the Pilgrim John Mitchell and left the party denouncing Standish.
