Stanton was president of lbs until 1973, when he walked out uninjured at the retire ment age of 65. Other television executives left Thel siness because they were pushed Down an elevator Shaft. For. Many years Stanton was one of the eight or nine people in this country who con trolled what a few Hundred million saw on television. It is a business of titles there Are so Many executives in the network build Ings on sixth ave that maybe half the titles have to ride up and Down in elevators so nobody will notice that they have nothing to do. When something important has to be decided two Guys sit Down someplace and do it. At the end of a 38-year career Stanton was handling such things As main events with the Nixon White House. Now he cools out As head of the red Cross. He also tinkers with a London newspaper the observer. And of a Lovely Day with Central Park spread below his office windows he sat and talked about an instrument that is More important to America than the  you see Nixon the other night Stanton was saying. He shrugged when asked if he had watched. I was in London. Was he a real threat to us i would say so. There was a grand plan to harass the net work brass and news people. Censorship no if they had remained in Power they would have been More skillful than that. They were out to divorce the affiliates from the networks. They had Herb Klein going around the country trying to get the local stations to rebel against the networks. He d say to a station in Indianapolis you people Are putting on Fine local news. It s when you run that network news from new York that you get into trouble now most Guys in this business make it through the sales Side. Salesmen Don t like Onn to offend a customer. So with salesmen in charge of local stations you had All these be rows who did t want to hear any beefs when they went to the country club. Then they were inviting these local Sta Tion owners to Washington. Being asked into the White House can be pretty Heady stuff for people from communities. Nixon people were trying to get them to divorce from the network news. They also talked about using the acc to Cut Back on our programming. They threatened to go to some sponsors on us. Most of that talk was coming from the area of Colson. It was real. As i say if these Fellows had stayed in  most people always Felt that Nixon Wouldhave had his greatest Success against television. Essentially he is a greedy person and television is a greedy Industry. He would have known right where to hit. As Stanton began to talk about All the violence on television this notion was reinforced. The violence comes from show business. They race to get to the biggest audience and use violence As a Crutch instead of skillful script writing. But Don t blame Hollywood for All the violence you watch. Blame the Guy buying it Here in new York. These Fel lows you see right Here out having a cock Tail after work. The violence would t be on if they did t buy the  think a big mistake was made when the acc took the network out of the program. Business. Now you either produce a show 100 per cent or buy it 100 per cent from an outside company. These companies making the shows Only know one thing. High ratings mean High income and Strong positive residuals from other countries. It s very Seldom you can get that Bottom line without ratings. And ratings come from action. The easy ways to fall Back on violence. The Man who produces an entertainment show now does it for the maximum return for himself so he does t have to worry about a License the Way a station  violence is one of the reasons that drove at least my old company into situation comedies. Trouble is some of these sitcoms give you cavities. They re top Sweet. The you be got to consider something else. If the networks decided not to buy All of this Vio Lence then the people making the show would go to Independent channels with them. Paley could be pure and have no network.". It All comes Down to a Public that lives with violence All around yet still likes to look at it even when the violence is unreal. Which Means that nothing is going to change that the nights still will be filled with cars squealing around Corners and people jumping out of them and shooting everybody dead. Everybody in new York will be blaming the Hollywood bums out in the Polo lounge for shows and it actually will be the Guy drinking next to you in the ground floor on 52nd St. Who ordered the thing onto the  Stanton a quiet Man with Gray Start ing to dominate his Light hair sits at his desk in a Black sweater and sees some Hope. You have to believe it s going to get better. In the four areas of programming prime time entertainment news daytime and Chil Dren if you can remember what it was 10 years ago and see what it is now you d real ize How far things have come. And there s no reason to believe that the situation will not be even better 10 years from now. Take these daytime serials alone. If you looked at one of their scripts and did t know that it was from a daytime soap opera you d say that it was pretty Good. Some of it is More True to life than anything  easy Way to change things quickly is to make a Rule. But i Don t want the govern ment making any rules. Once you make a Rule on violence then you la make a Rule on news. And that s bad. If there s going to be any changing of rules i d. Like to see Les rules. Eliminate the equal time provisions for political coverage. The 76 debates could be been better without the league of women voters running them. They had to do that to get around the equal time Rule. I d have had the two Guys up there alone say to them pick a topic and then let them Dis cuss it a while without four or five Modera tors breaking in i like this single topic idea. If i were doing the news on lbs now i d do Cronkite at 7 and then come on at 10 with a half hour on a single topic. The Way that Macneil does it. Half hour a night.
