European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 14, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday june 14, 1977 the stars and stripes Page 29 yank decries decline of racing Art by Randy Barnetts a onto racing columnist for me racing is strictly an Art form.1 that s How i define it. One should be Able to control his car on a Street circuit like Monaco and there should be no need co Guardrail. That s the Beauty of racing control at Speed. But today with All the Guardrail and chicanes racing has become less and less an Art form still that s the Way i like to think of defining his approach to racing was american Driver Peter Argetsinger who had come Over from England last weekend to compete in a German formula Ford championship race on the . Few Drivers would consider automobile racing As an Art form but Argetsinger s no action continued from Page 25 of the season in the Nightcap with 20 hits including 10 for extra bases. Cards 5, dodgers t Mike Tyson drove in three runs with two doubles and a single and Eric Rasmussen scattered 10 hits for his fifth win in helping the cardinals hand the dodgers their fifth loss in seven games. Tyson s second double of the game drove in two runs during a three run sixth inning outburst which enabled the cardinals to snap a 1-1 tie. Tommy John was the 6-7, padres 1-4 Jerry Reuss pitched a six hitter and Omar Moreno hit a two run single in a four run fourth inning leading the pirates to their Victory and handing two time 20 game Winner Randy Jones his seventh loss in the first game. Dave Parker hit his ninth Homer knocked in two runs and scored three to Lead Pittsburgh s 11-hit attack in the second 3, astros 1 Tom Seavor pitched a five hitter for his seventh win and Lenny handle singled and scored during a two run eighth inning for the mets who dealt Rookie Floyd Bannister his sixth setback. Seavor struck out six and walked two in raising his record to 7-3.braves 5, Phillies 3 Jeff Burroughs hit a three run Homer Fol lowing singles by Barry Bonnell and Willie Montanez with none out in the Bottom of the ninth earning the braves their Triumph Over the Phillies. Junior Moore and Pitcher Andy Messersmith also homered for the braves while Greg Luzinski hit his 13ih for the Phillies. Reliever Gene Garber was the loser. Approach comes from his background. His family has been involved in motor sport for Over 30 years and the family s thinking predates today s Guardrail extravaganzas. Peter s brother Mike races both in Europe and the ., while their father Cameron competed in the late 1940s and Early 50s at Watkins Olen. Sebring and Daytona. Deeply involved in the sport after hanging up his helmet. Cameron also established the Grand prix at wat Kins Clen and headed the sports car club of America until his recent retirement. Peter Argetsinger 25 and a graduate of Gettysburg College did some racing in the states then came to Europe in 1974 to get into single seater Competition aboard for Mula Fords. He directed the series in Ger Many in 1975 and again last year while competing in All of the events. Early this year he decided it was time to do the whole thing on a full time basis and compete in Britain the Mecca of formula car racing. The real action is in Britain and if one does Well there chances arc favourable for a move up and possibly a career in motor of the cars engines and gearboxes Are made there and it s where the experts and manufacturers look for Talent. If one fails to do Well in British racing it would be a Good idea to seek a More prosaic Job. For Argetsinger it s a Case of so far after saying As much Money As possible and with what he terms some sponsorship from his dutch bom wife Sjoukje she teaches school near Kaiserslautern German Argetsinger took the plunge in March and headed for England. Until now he s been a one Man team but Sjoukje will leave Germany this week now that school is closed and join him in England where he keeps his car a Cross be at the race care firm in Swanzey near the famous brands Hatch circuit. He does All of his own mechanical work to save Money although he freely admits i would rather not even see the car until i get in it to race but i must do my own work on it to save in 20 races so far he s done quite Well his Best Effort coming at brands Hatch two weeks ago when he finished third in a tremendously competitive race that had an original entry of More than 80 cars. In other races throughout England he s had three second place finishes five third place positions and Many fourths and fifths. He s failed to finish Only one race. What i m looking for though is my first win Argetsinger said. That will come but nothing is easy in these British races. The level of Competition or what i Call depth of held is Are so Many More people racing. An 80-car entry is a Good example. I Don t think the Quality of driving when compared to formula Ford racing in Ger Many is All that much better. But there s a far greater level of experience. In a Given race there will be about 20 very experienced Drivers and then 20 to 30 others with varying degrees ranging from a lot to a Little. So it makes for very competitive driving when it comes to qualifying and the Competition is Keener Argetsinger said because the races Are so Short about half the distance As a formula Ford race in Germany. So you must be up front continued on Page 30 Paul Argetsinger with wife Sjoukje. Angels 11, indians 4 Joe Rudi belted two homers and drove Home five runs in the Angels Romp. Nolan Ryan 9-5, got the win but was removed in Trie seventh inning after walking seven Bat ters. He struck out 10, however and yielded just three hits. Brewers 4, royals 0 the royals Many of whom played in Milwaukee Road jerseys were shut out on seven hits by Milwaukee Southpaw Jerry Augustine. Prior to the game thieves broke into the Kansas City clubhouse and stole $3.500 of uniforms and equipment. A s 7, tigers 1 Vida Blue 4-7, snapped a personal five game losing Streak with a four hitter his first win since May 9.mariners 5, Blue jays 2 Ruppert Jones lined a pair of rib singles and Jose Baez hit his first major league Home run to spark the mariners first Vic tory Over their fellow expansion team.
