The horses were tiring. The Wagon master glanced at the setting Sun stroking his unshaven Chin. It had been a Long Day but the Wagon train had almost reached its destination he took a firm grip on the reins and prodded the horses farther on. Finally after being on the Trail since sunup the Wagon wheels squeaked to a halt. Members of the Wagon train busied themselves attending to Hie weary horses collecting Wood for a campfire and preparing food for the evening meal. Soon they were relaxing around a warm fire enjoy ing the peace and quiet of the great out doors. The scene was not out of the 1800s but in 1977. The people on the Wagon train were not cowboys but members of the German american Kontak group Here at Hahn. They were the first americans to take the trip called the huns Lack eighteen adventuresome club members showed up at a Small German farm in the Hunsuck mountains one monday morning and embarked on a three Day journey through the mountains by horse and Cov ered Wagon. They were greeted at the farm by a Friendly German Farmer who spoke no in Alish and led to the stables where they were told about the horses How to feed harness and drive them the Farmer gave them a map to follow also in German and told them auf they were on their own from there. The great thing about said Ron Knox president of the group was that we were left completely on our own. They placed Complete Trust in our resourceful Ness and ability to learn fast none of us had Ever done anything quite like it but at the end of the three Days we were Allex perts the Wagon train composed of three wagons covered about 45 Miles in the three Dav journey they had designated routes to follow and designated areas to spend the night nobody slept much Knox said but nobody missed any sleep either. We just had one fantastic the wagons were big enough to sleep seven people and were equipped with tables lights and other necessities. Our first big Shock was the size of the horses. They were huge and a Little bit frightening. But the German was very Good about it. Giving us plenty of time to learn their names and get to know them before we took them Knox said. The safari Cost each participant about $25, which included the use of live horses and wagons sleeping bags and camping areas. After the first trip another Kontak group took the safari the next week. Everyone agreed that it s really a great thing. We found out about a five Day trip that is also offered and we re making plans to take it right now Knox said. John h. Macleod or. N assigned to the with tac Aing office of information at Matin a i old Brownie had the Job of leading the wagons around 45 Miles of Trail. Lulls and valleys provided special problems for Novice Drivers of the wagons. Usak photos by Dave Boprie
