European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 19, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Poge 14 the stars and stripes sunday june 19, 1977 letters to the editor Dod heating policy criticized this morning the temperature is 42 de Grees fahrenheit outside but the heat has been turned off in All military office build Ings quarters and billets in the Frankfurt area Ana military personnel Are still required to Wear their fatigue shirt sleeves rolled above the inquiry to the Frankfurt Public affairs office to Leam the reason for the Lac of heat. 1 was told that the decision to heat or net to heat military facilities is made bythe Dod according to the average temperature for one year ago. So because we had an unusually hot May in 1976 Here in Germany we get no heat in our building today and must sit in our offices and Homes course i was told exceptions could be made if the temperature fell below 65degrees. In t 42 degress below 65 de Grees still we have no heat Why has the Community commander made use of that exception ruling Here in Ober Ursel we Are in the Taurus mountains and our temperature is usually quite a few degrees cooler than Frankfurt but because we Are a sub Community of Frankfurt we have to wait for them to give us permission to turn on our heat according to their tempera Ture. I wonder How Many Man hours Are being lost today because people Are too cold to work effectively f wonder How Many Man hours will be lost within the next few weeks because people will los their resistance to disease due to the cold weather today How Many children will have to stay Home from school due to the colds or flu they will get trying to keep warm in their unscaled quarters to decide the question of whether to Heator not according to the Calendar instead of the thermometer is sheer stupidity agree with the president s Energy saving proposals and could work comfortable Inan office at 65 degrees but this is ridiculous i have had to Wear my coat an gloves All Day in the office and am still Shi vering. Something is definitely wrong wit the priorities of Dod if they insist on set Ting this policy for All military installation worldwide from Washington instead of Al lowing the local Community commanders thes ipes european edition col. Or Don t they think that the military Community com Manders have enough rank experience or intelligence to make this Type of decision and if the local Community commander does have the Power to turn on the Heathen the temperature Falls below 65 de Grees then Why was the heat turned of today mrs. Sandra r. Andersen Bernel Germany editor s note a. Cot Joel t. Cal Lahan director engineering and housing Frankfort military com Marty replies the intonation Root led in the letter concerning provision of beat is incorrect army regulations state that beat will not be provided when the outside temperature exceeds m degrees fahrenheit. Most heating plants la Frankfurt Radthe one in of Bernel Are High pressure Coal plants and Nave cons tolerable Start up an shut Down time lags. Consequently the regulation in Europe 1s applied to provide beat when the average temperature is below 85 degrees for More than 48 consecutive hours. Admittedly during seasonal transition periods some personal do Comfort May be experienced. The decision to turn the beat off was made on May 4 after the average temperature bad exceeded 61 degrees forbore than 48 consecutive hours at Oberer Sel. However As the writer noted temperatures fell later in the month and neat was provided on May 10 after local tempera Tures were below so degrees average for More than 48 consecutive snack bar manners As an employee of cafes in european a dependent wife i must say i sure come across some very Sloppy and disgust ing people. Most of the customers who come into the stack bar Are Nice but then there Are those few who spoil it for it too much of an Effort for people to flush a toilet and Why do women who should know better leave stinking dirty diapers and other things 1 won t mention on the floor of the snack bar restrooms we try to keep the restrooms clean forthe Public s use but it is really hard to keep them clean when some people mess it up Soba. There is such a big Deal made when people come into the snack bar and other facilities wearing Nice shorts and Halter when it is very hot outside. But then i see so Many people come in fully dressed Butin such a Sloppy manner. It does t make i feel that As Long As a person is neat an clean they should be allowed in even in shorts and would like to Point out that the employees at the snack bar Are not there for the purpose of babysitting children. Please mothers keep your children under you supervision. It s Only fair to the other Cus s getting so i hate to go do my laundry at the laundry mat. Why was the list for the washers and dryers done away with it was so much better when they used the list to dispense the use of the machines to people As they came in , we have people who bog three and four machines at a time when there Are people waiting to get just one. To in t fair those people who have More than on Washer or dryer should give up the others for the people who Don t have any. Is that an unreasonable request have the Days of being kind to one another gone u common Courtesy dead i Hope it in Moore sofa Weinfurt Germany key lesson for Little leagues a Large number of adults and children will be involved in this summer s sports programs especially softball and base Ball. Many people tend to forget sports Manship Ana Are interested Only in win Ning rather than playing for the fun and exercise. I Hope you can print the enclose article. It May help to remind us of the importance of Good sportsmanship and the necessity of umpires. Georgette Wayne Torre Jon Spain editor s note the following Artl. De by Bill Conan appeared in the Sacra mento Union and u reprinted wit permission today s Sermon a designation with which we nope you la agree Casein the form of a cupping ram the Fargo forum a North Dakota my percentage i could have mined eight Calls today Aad still got about it is a clipping Abo i Jensen who was track on the Bead by a Bat thrown while try a a Little league game in Terra haute fad. Jensen Shook off the blow continued to work the game but that night be went to the Hospital with Bead pains. While being kept overnight for observation the Umpire wrote the following letter to parents of Little leagues everywhere " i am an Umpire. I Don t do it for living but Only on saturdays and sundays for fun. I be played baseball coached stand watched it. But somehow nothing lakes the place of maybe it s because i feel that deep Down i am providing a fair Chance for Al kids to play the game without disagree ments and arguments. With All this Funte had there is something that still both ers me about my Job. Some of you folks Don t understand Why i m Here. " some of you feel i m Here to exert authority Over your son. For that reason you often yell at me when i make a mistake or encourage your son to say things that Hurt my feelings. How Many of you really understand that i try to be perfect i try not to make a mistake. I Don t want your son to feel he got a bad Deal from an Umpire. " yet no matter now hard i try i can the perfect. I counted the number of Calls i made in a six inning game today. The total number of decisions whether on balls and strikes or safes and outs was 146." i tried my Best to get them All right but i m sure i missed some. When you i checking the Check now that cafes has adopted a con fessed judgement stamp which should allow them to collect any bad checks the accept at no loss to cafes or decrease in the Money contributed to troop funds it is time to cease one procedure which does More than any i know to damage the pres Tige and authority of officers and senior refer to the checking the bum Check list for the name and social Security number of each officer and senior no who cashes a Check at the Exchange. My personal opinion is that any officer or senior no who repeatedly bounces checks should be busted. It is an indication of How Low the army has sunk that office Sand senior cos Are routinely treated like . Mccarthy Augsburg German editor s note Fred Schonwetter comptroller cafes Europe replies it is cafes policy to Check each Cus Tomer s social Security number before accepting his personal Check. Some officers and senior cos a Well As privates do write bad checks. All customer Are treated alike at cafes Aad to exclude senior personnel from our Check verification procedure would be a very poor red of k per cent right to to exx lion. Percentage would be considered ii 1 were in school that Grade would re . " but your demands Are higher than that let me Tell you More about my game today. There was one Clou Call that ended the game. A Omner for the borne team we trying to steal the plate on a passed Catcher chased the Ball Down i and threw to the Pitcher covering Pitcher made the lag and i called the runner i was getting my equipment to leave i overheard one of the parents com meat it s too bad the Ktut have to inc be games because of Rotten umpires. That was one of the tousle Calls i be Ever later at the Concession stand couple of the Kidi were telling their mends boy the umpires were Lousy today. They lost the game for us Well i Beard that and i Fen terrible when i got Home. Here was a group of kids who had made a lot of mistakes which had cos them a number of runs. " a Parent or adult Leader who permit the younger player to blame his failure on an Umpire is doing the worst kind of injustice to that youngster. Rather than learn ing responsibility such an attitude i fostering an improper Outlook toward the ideals of the game itself. This irresponsibility is bound to carry Over to future As i sit Here writing this letter i am no longer As upset As i was this afternoon. Wanted to quit umpiring behind the plate for a Pitcher who pantomime his displeasure at any Call on a borderline pitch that was not in his team s one could sense that he wanted the Croud to realize that he was a Fine talented player who was doing his Best to get along but that i was a Black hearted Vil than who was working against him. This idd continued for two innings while at the same time Yelling at his own players who dared make a for two innings the manager watched this. When the kid in the top of the third the manager called him aside. In a voice loud enough that i was Able to overhear the lecture went like this listen Ion it s time you make a decision. Yon can be an Umpire an actor or a Pitcher. But you can be Only one time a playing for now it is your Job to pitch. And you Are basically doing a Lousy Job. Leave the acting to the actor and the umpiring to the umpires or you won t do any rtt Chine Here. Now what u it to be "T8 " needless to say the idd chose and went on to win the game. When the game was Over the kid Fol Lowed me to my car. Fighting his hardest to keep Back the tears a Logia Edfors actions and thanked me for umpiring the game. He said that he had Learned tenon that he would not forget. " i can t help but wonder Bow anymore Fine Young men Are missing their Chance to develop into outstanding null players because their parents Eit Colrage them to spend time umpiring rather than the following morning Donald Jensen part time Umpire of cute league died is end of reminder.
