European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 12, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Veteran actor at 21 Robby Benson dribbling Star and co author with father of one on one. By Janet Maslin new York times daily Magazine one on one with United artists first love with Glynnis o Connor in Jeremy in 1975. Had been peddling one on one since i was of 19," said Robby Benson the Veteran actor and fledgling screen writer who is now of 21. People were always patting me on the head and saying in t that cute you be got lots of time for that. Nobody would read it and take me seriously. It was a Little frustrating but it never really bothered me because i never thought anyone would buy it. When i found out that Warner Brothers wanted it i looked Down and. And i was standing on a Benson has been up in the air Ever since. He is elated about one on one because his role required him to play a lot of basketball. The screenplay co written by Benson s father Jerry Segal who came up with the original idea is about a Small town innocent who attends College on an athletic scholarship and runs afoul of organized sports. Perhaps the leading role could have been played by any number of Young actors but Benson who bashfully pro claims himself a Hotshot when it comes to the game says that not that Many actors play basketball Well enough to do it take after he himself often dribbles in route to auditions. With or without his basketball Benson a handsome fellow with Long lashes and a lot of a shucks in his manner has been trotting off to auditions for nigh onto 16 years. When i was 5," he recalled recently i saw Oliver on Broadway. I was sitting in a front Row Mezza nine with mom and dad and i turned to them and said that looks great 1 know i can do it i Wanna try " my mom she s an actress Ann Benso was doing summer Stock then the King and i and so i auditioned for the part of the Prince. Everybody laughed at me cause i was Only 5, and they gave me one of the Little kid parts. But the next year she was playing the part of Nancy in Oliver and i auditioned to play Oliver and was t 6 an awfully tender age for a leading Man Nooroo mused Benson knitting his brow. Kids play him anywhere Between 6 and 10. It s the same kind of at 10, Benson had found his Way Over to Madison Avenue and was auditioning for commercials but my name was Segal then he said and i could t get a Job. One Day i went in for this audition and one Guy said that ugly Little jew boy he can leave right now i overheard him they never try to be quiet anyway and i went Home and told my dad. He said yeah that s going to happen a lot is this what you like to do i said Well i really like it but i sure Don t like what the Guy said then he told me you can take your Mother s Maiden name. Try that and see what happens i typed it on my resume and i got the next Job. I Don t know whether it was because of that but i got so hot it was he got so hot that he began starring in feature films at 15. His first movie a Western called Jory was a family film made right found the time when family films went out and Straw dogs came then came Jeremy a poignant account of first love that made a lasting impression on its Star for a number of reasons. For one thing the film was the occasion of Benson s first and Only trip to the Cannes film festival. While there he flubbed his chances of appearing in a potential sequel by picking a fight with the producer thinking he was making a pass at his Mother. He also remembers Jeremy As one of the closest things to my heart cause while i was doing it i met one of the most fantastic girls Glynnis o Connor Ben son s Jeremy leading lady later co starred with him in ode to Billy Joe and for a while in life. But then she went her own Way cause we were spending a lot of time with each other said Benson who counts Romeo and Juliet among his very favorite movies. I guess that s very Good he added ruefully smacking his knee. It was while he and o Connor were at work on ode to Billy Joe that Benson began writing his first screenplay. Shooting Billy Joe precipitated one disagree ment after another it was like a Benson does t like to use makeup it makes his skin break out or fake tears and one Day just As he was working up to a Good on camera cry the director called a lunch break. That did it he went Home and began writing the stand out a script that showed some of the things that 1 was seeing around me in the business some things about the Way people operate. It was my Only Way of fighting he has fought Back with four More scripts since then including one on one which has invited comparisons be tween Benson s chutzpah and that of Sylvester Rocky Stallone. I know what it takes to get a film off the ground said Benson and i really Admire him for doing it. I m still Young and people say that when you e Young you can do whatever you want. You Don t even realize what s going on you just think you can do anything. I think it was harder for Sylvester in a Way because he was an older actor and it As harder for him to peddle his own script. But for me. Well even though people did t take me that seriously i had this Blind. It was t ambition i just thought the script was Good. Maybe i did t have enough years to Analyse it. But like people Are always saying when you re Young you Don t have any fear monday september 12, 1977 the stars and stripes Page 13
