European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 13, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday september 13, 1977 the stars and stripes Page 19 veto Lindenberg by Dan Warfield is entertainment editor in 1980 i d like to be the German Chancellor an then meet or. Carter and say How do your pea nuts taste Man so said German Rock Star Udo Lindenberg in a backstage interview during a recent Rock festival in Karlsruhe. His outrageous statements and behaviour have earned him the displeasure of Many staid promoters and concert Hall owners in Germany but he seemed sane and thoughtful enough As he sipped his Tea and Cognac. Now 31, Lindenberg May not have much of a shot at the top Job in Bonn but he s keeping up his standards As one of Germany s top Home grown Rock stars. He is at least to some extent a 1970s German version of what Bob Dylan was to America in the Early 1960s a combination of Rock Street idiom and politics that Points the Way for the new generation. Lindenberg left Germany in 1963, when he was 16, to Start his career As a musician singing in Ameri can military clubs in Tripoli. It was jazz oriented dance music i left my heart in san Francisco of Danny boy. He began to croon ". The pipes the pipes Are did that for a year and i had great fun in Tripoli. It was the first time i was so far away from my Home town in Gronau where they All told me you gotta do this this and that Way and the whiskey was so cheap Man and iwas Only 17 and i got so ill. The whiskey was Only 20 after that i studied music before i started singing and before i found out that the Best thing for a German cat is to sing the language that he really knows because English american language this is not my real thing. And i said forget about All this silly Oom Tah you know the authentic thing is my language and to Tell the people stories that i know and that i happen to overhear in Germany. I started that in 71, and before Long i had a big Success with it. He s trying hard he says to shake up the social and political complacency he attributes to the majority of the German people. They All read the fing Bild Zeitung and they Don t know what the of is going Bild is Germany s sensational crime and violence packed mass circulation daily it s a shame but it s Only three or four years ago we were the first very successful group in Germany singing German words combined with Rock music with a show where we let it All hang in the Early Days Rock n Roll was not Only music it had an abstract Power. We kids knew it was our thing. It was the first time we could say to the older ones you Are too old for what we Are thinking instead of the other Way around when they say you Are too Young for this and that with folks like Elvis for the first time we could Tell them you Are too old for this we were searching for peace and Flower Power and All this and it s very sad that this thing is completely finito. It s things like that we want to renew to Combine our kind of youth culture with he popped his Tongue while he tapped his head with a knuckle " a head. I like to Freak out on stage sometimes but on the other hand it would be silly if i would Only be the Monkey Lindenberg is too Young to have first hand memo Ries of the War that ravaged his Homeland but grow ing up in its aftermath left him convinced that Germany s arts had suffered As badly As its cities. After the War the music that had the German touch was Cut because the germans made such a big bulls those years the nazi bulls and All that and we be got to forget about All that. Some of these Guys like Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill made real Good sounds in the 20sbut this was All forgotten. The nazis said we have to do our own thing in Germany our own culture and this culture has to con form to the party ideology they burned so Many Good books and literature. They said we Don t want to have that in Germany so Many strange ideas that Don t fit to our thing that s what the nazi idiots said. Only a very few musicians could do their own thing. Some of them left Germany and did their thing in the states. Some writers too emigrated and did their things a who it de the authentic thing is my in other countries. After the War they were established in other countries and did not come Back so soon so we had nothing in Germany. We had big influences music Wise from other countries with american and English music. But most of the music that we had in Germany after the War for so Many years was silly bulls. You know German Schlager Oom Tah Oom Tah Oom Tah " Lindenberg is now trying to break into the English speaking Rock Market writing and singing a few tunes in English. He s been favourably received by the British music press the gatekeeper of stardom in that country and plans to make an assault on America in the near future.
