European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 14, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday september 14,1977 the stars and stripes Page 25 by Randy Barnett racing Roundup Andretti s Victory in the italian grand prix last sunday at Monza and subsequent hints that he May join Ferrari rather overshadowed the fact that runner up Niki Lauda now All but mathematically clinched the title. But that s not surprising. Lauda who is leaving Ferrari at the end of the season was Well on Way to the Crown after win at Bockenheim and with second place at Austria and another win at Zand Voort that was it anyway. Few would have bet on Lauda to make such a great come Back but he did proving about everyone wrong. The austrian Driver is very deserving of the title and it will be interesting to see How he gets on next year. Apparently in a Brabham Alfa Romeo. The big Story of course now concerns the possibility that Andretti May join Ferrari next year even though he said at Zand Voort that he s Happy with Lotus and Colin Chap Man and that he intended to stay on with the British team for 1978. But that statement came before Lauda quit Ferrari. Andretti who drove for Ferrari during 1971 on an on off basis revealed at Monza that he an offer from the italian tet fun but he to think about it. Ferrari May make an announcement this week on its Driver lineup for next year and i have a Hunch that Andretti s name will be on the list. His Only goal is to win the world championship and with Ferrari he could Well do it. But with Lotus too for that matter. Although Andretti is 37, there s still no hurry up urgency because in Case age does t mean much. He s like Jack Brabham who was absolutely competitive when he retired at age 45. But for the italian born american Driver to pass up a Ferrari offer would be difficult indeed. There Are problems however. Sources at Ferrari have said its prospective Drivers All have to Promise they will concentrate exclusively toward winning for the italian team. . Commitments involved if Andretti signs on this basis hell have to forego Many . Commitments and concentrate Only on Ferrari and formula 1. And there s the rub. With Lotus Andretti can have some things own Way. But with Ferrari it s All or nothing. And that includes a tremendous amount of testing one of the labors that Lauda took on insisted on for that Matterand a labor that paid off big for the austrian. At Lotus Andretti is strictly no. 1 and he s received excellent support from teammate Gunnar Nilsson. It s expected that Carlos Reutemann will stay on at Ferrari and i can t imagine Reutemann playing no. 2 to anyone. But if Andretti signs Andretti will be no. 1 at Ferrari. Regarding Reutemann Lauda said earlier this year he raced not Only against the Field but also against own teammate. Reutemann was certainly no Clay Regazzoni who played the perfect no. 2 to Lauda for three years. Although Andretti suffered some bitter disappointments this season Lotus 78 still been the car to beat. Andretti had five pole positions he s won four races next up is Lauda with three but four straight engine failures before Monza have been very demoralizing. Andretti knows Ferrari is the most reliable machine and certainly the offer must be tempting. The american Driver faces a Tough decision and one Way or the other it will be a turning Point in career.
