Hundreds of Lufthansa employees and journalists had assembled to watch the arrival of the hostage Passen Gers who had been captive for four Days on the hijacked plane. But the passengers were too drained to be overjoyed. They could not forget the terror of the past few Days especially the murder of their Pilot which they had been forced to watch. The spectators were sym pathetic. This was not a time for shouts and cheers but a time to show respect for those who had lived through such horror. From the plane passengers were taken to a Lufthansa canteen where they met for the first time with relatives. They were Given food and clothing. Those who wished were then taken to hangar 3 for a Short Welcome ceremony. The Pilot s widow mrs. Jirgen Schu Mann was escorted by government officials to the Brief ceremony where she listened As her husband was praised for giving up his life for others. The government exultant in a major Victory Over terrorism after a Long series of defeats did not want to mar the Home coming by any ceremony that might remind the world of German militarism. So absent was the military note that we Gener Shook hands with Interior minister Werner Maihofer who has jurisdiction Over the Force instead of saluting him. Maihofer summed up the feeling of the country in a Brief Airport speech. It is a Small Miracle he said. All the surviving 86 hostages were rescued alive. Only one Man in the unit suffered a slight injury. We had not dreamed of such a Happy outcome although we hoped for it when we made our decision.
