I Don t like it. It makes me very uncomfortable he said if the truth were known about his relationship with Martin it would Surprise a lot of people. Surprisingly As it sounds Billy Martin and i Are a lot Thurman Munson has expressed a desire to be traded to Cleveland to be nearer to his family and he Steinbrenner will try to accommodate that wish but doubted that he could get equal value for Munson so such a Trade was unlikely. It was always his desire to have Jack son Bat in the fourth spot because the blame so that i can drink the Champagne communicating often. But let me go on the or. The Yankees Success this season vindicates the measures he has taken with the team. Their performance on the Field and their ability to draw record numbers of fans prove that the greater part of what we be done was Steinbrenner who bought the Yankees from the Columbia broadcasting system in 1973 for $10 million and brought them from also ran status to the american league championship in four seasons was composed and even charitable As he spoke. There was no Trace of the Man who has been publicly described As ruthless shrewd impulsive and rapturously Abra in fact his Public image disturbed him. I d like most of All to be thought of As a fair Man he said. It s funny nobody has Ever been Able to catch the Way that i feel. I try to project it but i guess i can t. The single hardest thing to per Suade people is How hard you have to work to succeed. I m a Driver. I drive my people hard and i realize that i drive them hard but i try to go Back in other ways and show them i care. Maybe it s wrong but i Don t know How to succeed without driving. It never both ers me being thought of As Tough or deter nine or competitive or Strong willed. But Petty arrogant no that s not me. 111 Tell you this most of the people who strive and drive Aren t particularly loved. When things Are going Good. My people know that ultimately i la take the it was suggested to Steinbrenner that because of his part in the controversies with Munson Martin and Jackson that he was perceived As dogmatic a Man who suffers no Public criticism. He said i be got to admit that s the Way it looks. That s the Way it comes out often often. Maybe you have to say that it is accurate but that s not the feeling i have. A certain amount of it is because i have to make the Tough decisions and i la Tell you that it s lonely at the top it s the loneliest place in the whole world. But the people who say thanks for All that you be done in making the Yankees winners even if it s thanks for spending All your Money that s vindication. If you spend your Money wisely and you Are successful i Don t see How they can Knock Foremost among Steinbrenner s controversies has been the on again off again managerial status of Martin. Martin has two years remaining on his contract but Steinbrenner would not confirm monday that Martin s services would be retained As the actual manager. He insisted that Paul would make the final decision. It s Gabe s decision Steinbrenner said. He s a Brilliant Man on baseball however Steinbrenner did indicate that it would not be All that surprising to see Martin As the manager next season. Athletics is show business today it s big time Steinbrenner said. It has to been that is Why he went on the Yankees acquired the services of Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson on the free agent Market. Stars sell tickets and Billy Martin certainly is a Star in new York. Maybe Billy Martin never could have made it without me and maybe i never could have made it without him Stein Brenner said. You know we re very much alike. We re both competitors. When we Are sitting and talking in a bar a restaurant or a locker room we have a terrific relationship. I m at my Best then and so record about Billy Martin. He managed a Brilliant playoff series and he s managed a Brilliant world series so far. He Hung real Tough. He s improved Over last year he tougher he s in reviewing the season Steinbrenner said nobody likes turmoil and problems but it makes better people of new York City had been maligned and few years he noted. People Are trying to make new York the underdog and there s no Way they can. This is a great City. I have the Yankees that s All i have but there s no Way i m going to let the Yankees be an underdog. Then i came Back to my hotel and i heard he was saying that i left the club. But he gave me permission. It is just misunderstanding the Flap the latest in a seemingly end less series of disputes involving the Yan Kees this season began after sunday s game when Martin was asked to name his Pitcher for game 6. He named Figueroa who has not pitched in More than a wee due to a sore Finger. But moments before leaving for the air port from dodger stadium Martin changed his mind and said Torrez the Winner in game 3, would pitch for the yanks. Martin said he changed his mind when i checked with the doctor and two trainers and i found out he did t let them know he was 100 per cent. That s Why i m in i know he wants to pitch but i m not going to take a Chance and put a Man out there who is not 100 per cent in a big game said Martin. He probably feels bad not being Able to but i never Tell my people to take the is he. The problems happen when we re not pitch. The Guy has a lot of Pride and i can t fault him.
