Kcf of a Stormy season it was ironic but perhaps fitting that Jackson should emerge the batting hero of the finale. Jackson was at the Center of Many of the Yankees controversies during the year and he had repeated run ins wit Martin that threatened to disrupt the spirit of the when the Money was on the line it was Down the stretch and in the Post season Competition it was Jackson who most often came through in the clutch forthe Yankees. And the crowd loved him. Each Tim Jackson hit a Home run tuesday night the crowd screamed Reggie Reggie Reggie and Jackson acknowledged the cheers by waving his Cap to the More than56,000 fans. After his final Homer the crowd would not quiet Down until Jackson came out of the dugout and made an appearance. He smiled at the crowd and tipped his Cap much in the manner of the mighty babe. The dodgers who had bombed the Yan Kees 10-4 on sunday had expressed Confidence they could Send the series into decisive seventh game and they started out the Way they had in each of the Previ Ous two games at Yankee stadium with a pair of runs in the first if it had t been for an error by shortstop Bucky Dent Torrez would have escaped the inning without trouble. Torrez retired the first two batters an seemingly had Smith out on a grounder to Dent but the Yankee shortstop hobbled Heball while trying to backhand it on a High Bounce and Smith was Safe at Cey walked and Steve Garvey drove Home both runners by ripping a triple into the Brightfield Corner. Chambliss Homer adds two runs the Yankees Chris Chambliss connects for a two run Homer in the second inning of tuesday series finale in new York. Dodgers Pitcher Byirt Hooton and Catcher state Yeager. John my Sherry the Umpire. A yanks More relieved than joyous continued rom Page 21 Christian but i m not perfect. I sin All Jackson along with Many other Yan Kees seemed More relieved that the season had come to an end than overjoyed by the Yankees first world championship in 15 years. But every so often his elation showed through. Nothing can top this he repeated. Who Gonna hit three Home runs in the deciding game of the world series Here he permitted himself a slight smile. I m it was an incredibly powerful end to a season which began in controversy which ebbed and flowed All summer right up to the afternoon of the final game when the Yankees finally gave manager Billy Martin a vote of Confidence and said he would fill the remaining two years of his contract. I hit the Ball Good in batting practice. Real Good Jackson said. I knew they d pitch me inside and i was just trying to keep the Ball in the playing Field. The first two Home runs were on balls inside. They were trying to pitch me inside All Jackson hit a two run shot off Burt Hooton in the fourth inning another two run smash off Elias Sosa in the fifth and a monstrous 450-foot drive off Charley Hough in the eighth. I was thinking about a Home run the last time Jackson said but really i was More or it ?.s thinking about a hit. I had a Good swing at it and Bingo i could t really believe the end of the Yankees tumultuous and divisive but ultimately successful Campaign also came a Relief to Martin who cried tears of Joy just one year after he wept in embarrassment when the Yankees were swept in four games by the Cincinnati reds. I can t put it into words said the fiery Little manager he sat slumped behind his office desk All the fire seemingly extinguished for the time being. It something you wish for All your life cubs sign three coaches Chicago a the Chicago cubs have announced the signing of three new coaches for the 1978 season cookie Rojas Joey Amalfitano and Mike Roarke. And Here it happened continued Martin who played on four world championship teams a Yankee under Casey Stengel. I bet he Happy Martin said with a catch in his voice he stared at a prominent picture of Stengel on his Wall. I know he Happy. I have a lot to thank that Man for but i wish he d taught me More about Public relations. I Don t think i had anything to prove. Last year we got beat because we weren t ready this year we were ready. Every thing worthwhile now. Reggie was super just super. I m real Happy for Martin discourse was interrupted by the Entrance of George Steinbrenner the Yankees outspoken and controversial owner. Acting Calm Cool and collected and wearing a poker face Steinbrenner extended his hand to Martin muttered Nice going see you later and started to walk away. But Only for a second. The owner and the manager fell into each other arms and Steinbrenner said the world Champion ship Back in new York where it it did t take Long for the Yankees to get those runs Back however. Hooton got him self in trouble by walking Jackson on four pitches to Start the Yankees second and Chambliss then unloaded a 400-foot Homer to right Centerfield. Smith Homer put the dodgers in front in the third 3-2, but los Angeles missed an Opportunity to build its Lead in the fourth when Steve Yeager gambled in trying to stretch a single into a double and was thrown out at second by left fielder Lou Piniella. Rick monday had singled with one out when Yeager drove a shot just inside the third base bag Down the Loftfield line. Monday made third easily but Piniella played the carom perfectly and Cut Down Yeager at second. Torrez then struck out Hooton to end the inning. That seemed to be the impetus the Yan Kees needed. With Hooton not nearly Sharp he had been in defeating the Yan Kees in the second game the Bronx bomb ers knocked him out in the fourth. Thurman Munson started the inning by lining a Sharp single to left and Jackson followed by depositing Hooton first pitch into the Brightfield stands for a Home run. After going to 2-1 on the next Batter Chambliss Hooton was relieved by Elias Sosa who was immediately victimized by some shoddy Fielding which led to another Yankee run. Sosa got Chambliss to hit a High pop Fly to medium Loftfield toward the line and shortstop Bill Russell called left fielder Dusty Baker off the Ball he tracked it Down. Then at the last second Russell shied away from the Ball and it dropped for a double. Graig Nettles moved Chambliss to third with an infield out and Piniella got him Home with a Long Fly to left. Jackson blast in the fifth with Willie Randolph aboard on a fielder Choice put the Yankees ahead 7-3 and his Solo shot in the eighth closed out their scoring to make Jackson the Only player in series history Ever to hit four Home runs in four Succes Sive official at bats. Jackson had homered in the eighth inning of game 5 in his last at Bat sunday. The dodgers did t score again until the ninth when with one out Garvey beat out an infield hit and Baker singled to left sending Garvey to second. Garvey took third on a Long Fly to right by monday then scored on Pinch hitter Vic Dava Lillo squeeze bunt. Lacy however tried the same thing but popped to Torrez to end the season. Jackson named map of series new York a Reggie Jackson whose five Home runs set a world series record was named most valuable player of the series for his accomplishment tues Day night. Jackson who will receive a car from a National Magazine became the first Man in series history to hit three consecutive Home runs. The Only other Man to hit three in a single game was the legendary babe Ruth who did it for the Yankees in 1926 and 1928, both times against the cardinals in St. Louis. Jackson 25 total bases and 10 runs scored also set series records. The Previ Ous Marks of 24 total bases for a seven game series was shared by Brooklyn Duke Snider who did it in 1952, and Lou Brock of St. Louis who did it in 1958. The record for a six game series was set in 1953 by current Yankees manager Billy Martin. Previous record for runs scored in a series was nine shared by Yankee Immor tals Ruth who did it in 1928 and Lou Gehrig who did it in 1932.
