European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 03, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes water recreation is As old As humanity itself but Only since world War ii has scuba diving become possible and popular. It allow underwater explorers who previously could submerge Only their faces with a snorkel tube to venture Well below the surface by Means of a breathing apparatus containing compressed which stands for self contained underwater breathing apparatus diving like Mountain climbing and skydiving takes Man out of his accustomed element. Thus it pose dangers primarily from the pressure of the water surrounding the diver and the com pressed air within his tank. One of the most dangerous hazards of unequal pressure Bare trauma can effect the ears nasal cavity sinuses and bar trauma which injures or ruptures the Middle ear and eardrums can occur when the diver either descends if pressure within the Middle ear is less than the pressure of surrounding water. Include painful congestion swelling or nip ure of the Middle ear membranes ringing or hissing sounds in the ears dizziness or hear trauma also strikes the nasal cavity and sinuses. Sometimes As a diver descends increasing water pressure of in which capillaries burst and blood enters the nasal sinuses. Or during ascent unequal pressure forces blood from the nasal cavity. The most serious Hazard bar trauma of the lungs occurs not while a diver is descend ing because the breathing apparatus delivers air at a pressure equal to that of the surround ing water but when the diver takes a breath of compressed air and ascends without Eznal this problem afflicts a Novice diver or Stu Dent who panics whether in a shallow swim leukaemia cure chances for Young called Good Memphis a researchers at St. Jud children s research Hospital claim no Mira Cle cure but they now believe statistics Are on the Side of life for Young leukaemia patients. Leukaemia a family of cancerous blood Dis eases once meant certain death for its Vic Tims. But in recent years research has Turne Dop treatments largely chemotherapy tech " Aqua which have meant longer life and Inmany cases Complete remission for patients. What has been missing however is so mend of time guideline by which to determine Ben a patient could be considered cured. I appears that guideline has been pinned Down. For the first time we be had enough experience. In the children we have studied. To draw guidelines that indicate the likelihood of this disease coming Back is Small or. Arvin Mauer the Hospital s medical director said. Mauer beads the 48-bed research Hospital founded u years ago by entertainer Danny Thomas. The institution specializes in re search into catastrophic diseases of children much of St. Jude s research has been aimed a acute Lymphocyte in leukaemia the Type of Dis ease which bits almost 2,000 children each year. Mauer said 80 percent of 300 children who have undergone St. Jude s treatment Are now showing no signs of the disease some 3vt years after treatment ended. The situation is that there have been som children who have had control of their disease for a Long time he said. But most eventually relapsed. Since the 1960s, there has been a gradual improvement in the number of Chil Dren who have been in published reports of the statistics released by St. Jude s on tuesday resulted in hundreds of Telephone Calls to the Hospital by parents hoping for a sure cure for the disease. Mauer said in a Telephone interview that while the statistics show a greater Chance for survival for Youthful leukaemia patients medi Cal science cannot guarantee a cure. St Jude s researchers have conducted nine separate leukaemia treatment programs Over the years each one an attempt to improve on previous treatment methods. Mauer said the statistics represent a Long difficult Effort to develop a treatment that will be More effective than the previous program. Wednesday May 3, 1978 bar trauma is always a danger in scuba diving mine Pool or in the Ocean Depths. Lung sir exceeds that of the surrounding water and this Over inflates the lungs an damages their tissues. Symptoms include Dif Kiclty in breathing and swallowing coughing up blood hoarseness and sore Throat. Lung bar trauma May cause compressed air in the lungs to release Gas that enters the bloodstream and blocks a blood vessel or even worse causes a cerebral air embolism or Bubble that makes its Way to the include difficulty in seeing and speaking confusion paralysis Union Clou Ness and convulsions. The Only treatment is to put the diver into a hyperbaric or pressurized chamber. If this is not available emergency first Aid measures such As respiratory Reguci tation or an oxygen mask should be provided. The third major Hazard of scuba diving i decompression sickness or the bends. As the diver descends nitrogen one of the gases inthe increasingly pressurized air the diver breathes is absorbed into the tissues an bloodstream. When the diver returns to the surface the blood carries excess nitrogen tothe lungs where it is eliminated through breathing. If the diver rises too quickly the difference Between the High nitrogen and Low surrounding water pressure causes nitrogen to form bubbles in the tissues and bloods bubbles Block blood flow and create pressure on tissues. Symptoms of the Bend usually appear within 24 hours after the diver has surfaced. They include joint pain breath ing difficulty Chest pain coughing visual disturbances unconsciousness muscular weakness Back pain difficulty in walking urine retention and partial paralysis. Unless decompression sickness is recognized and treated Early in a hyperbaric chamber irreversible tissue damage will result. The Safe and successful scuba diver takes certified scuba diving course is in excellent health never dives alone avoids diving Wither or nose infections and blockages and never holds his breath while ascending. Heals knows How to use a decompression table which tells How quickly he should Rise to the surface. In addition he attaches this Telephone number to his diving gear 904 234-4391.
