European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 23, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 14 the stars and stripes sunday july 23, 1978 questions on terminal leave 1 retire on feb. 2%, 1979, after completing a mandatory 12-month tour in Ger Many. 1 knew 1 was eligible to take Ordi nary leave during my stay Here and that leave time i did take would be counted to Ward that mandatory one year. I also fal sely assumed i would be Able to take Termi Nal leave to clarify this i called my servicing regional personnel Center and was informed i can take All of the Ordinary leave i have coming during my enlistment and that i would All count toward my tour require ment. However terminal leave would not count towards that year. Since i can t take terminal leave i will Cash in those 30 Days. That will Cost Uncle sugar Over $1,000. Or i could elect to extend Tor 30 Days und then apply for Termi Nal leave and qualify. This instead of Cost ing the army $s.ooo, would Cost $1,400 and they would not gain a single duty Day extra for that $400.there is one other More important effect on me. If i am permitted to take terminal leave i would also be Able to elect what Post i wanted to retire at thus permitting friends and relatives to attend the ceremony. Since i can t take terminal leave with out extending for 30 Days i will be retired at a location of the army s choosing Tak ing All meaning away from the ceremony Why bother with a retirement Parade at a a Post you have Only been at for three or four Days with no one there who know you i have a lot of friends at fort Bliss and the traditional ceremony would have a lot of meaning for me there. Instead. I will most Likely be retired at fort Jackson. . Some 1.700 Miles from family and friends.1 can see no reason Why a regulation would permit me to take Ordinary com passionate and emergency leave and count any of those towards my tour but not count terminal leave. In either Case the Soldier is lost to the army for the same amount of time Tike i said. I could extend for 30 Days to qualify for terminal leave and gain an extra $400 on the Deal. In contrast the army loses $1,000 by forcing me to Cash i that leave. Perhaps someone at military personnel Center Europe can fully explain this. Locally they Tell me while on Ordinary com passionate or emergency leave 1 am Lechi Cally still assigned to the command whereas with terminal leave accountability is transferred to a stateside separation european edition col. In both cases my service is lost to the army for the duration of that leave. The Only Dif Ference i can see is that if i were Given Ter Minal leave the army would reimburse me the Cost of travel and if i Lake Ordinary leave it will Cost me some $450 for round trip air fare. And immediately upon return to Germany i would pick up my clearance papers and Start getting ready to head right Back it be Ordinary compassionate emergency or terminal leave is leave and i earn it at the rate of 2.5 Days a month. It should be left up to me How i use me i will most Likely elect to beat the system by extending for 30 Days to qualify for terminal leave thus taking advantage of the extra $400 the army will pay me for not working. Does t the army Ever take economics into consideration they save $1,000 if i use up my leave before i re tire lose $400 by making me take it 30 Day Slater than i want to or they lose $1,000 by not letting me use it. This applies to both accompanied and do accompanied Toon. Commanders normally approving leave May Grant pre re rement leave not to exceed that which the Retiree win have accrued by the retirement helpful germans i just finished watching the an special report the battered Dollar and found it to be a Well prepared report. I feel that one area of help that is being Given was neglected and should have been mentioned. Some German landlords have tried to help by lowering rents and others have built new houses and have rented them to service people. The program has shown that command level personnel Are aware of the Money problem and that some things have Bee done. Like it was stated a lot More is needed to be done i Hope that there . Sgt. Germany letters to the army attitude toward sin when will the army Stop discriminating against single people i always thought we were supposed to be an equal Opportunity employer. I have Al ways been aware of this problem but recently it has become More and More into recently arrived in Europe and was shocked prior to leaving the states to find that although i m an e-7 with 13 years Active duty i was Only allowed to ship 400 pounds of hold baggage. This of course is much less than my married counterpart with less years service and of a lower live on the Economy in an apartment that costs me 1250 month. I Don t enjoy the luxuries of life that my married co workers have who live in government the use of a free Washer and dryer a place to Wash my car a refrigerator big enough to actually hold a half gallon of milk standing up and a Freezer big enough to hold More than an ice tray. I Don t have Access to a Yard to walk my dog Barbecue Lay in the Sun or just sit and enjoy the outside and the neighbors. I Don t even have the option of taking a Shower almost German apartments have Only a hath which i happen to hate i live Only three Miles from work but i m unable to watch american to shows be cause i can t pick up reception. I had to rent one to find this out As the army would t ship my to or stereo since i m single and not allowed shipment of House hold goods As a single person i pay More taxes make less Money and in Many cases spend More Money to live in equal Comfort As does a married sergeant major identical in rank and Grade. To some people these things May sound pretty Petty but really Aren t they the Basic everyday things that most Ordinary people Are accustomed to i resent not be ing afforded Access to some of these com forts too. I think it s unfair when a married e-4 with a spouse can be Given the option of either living on the Economy or living in government quarters. 1 Don t have that same Choice and would t even if i were an e-9. For those of you who would suggest that i could either move into the Barracks or get married i can Only say that it s that Type of total apathy that comes All too often from married people who Aren t affected by unfair treatment single people Are subjected to in the military. Please Don t misunderstand me. I Don t resent you or the things you have you de serve them. But i do resent a system that robs me of those same Basic entitlements Only because of one simple thing i m sin Gle. Think the army is basically a super place to be but on this one Issue if belong ing to the army Means belonging to an equal Opportunity organization then where am i sgt 1. C. Bonnie l.
