European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 31, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes monday july 31, 1978 Usa eur Golf championships Haugen Curtis win open seniors Bydon Sauk staff writer Heidelberg Germany is skip Haugen of Berlin and Jim Curtis of the 21st support come walked off with the open and seniors division crowns Here sunday to wind up the Usa eur Golf Champion ships at Heidelberg Golf club. Haugen had it virtually locked up Start ing play sunday and won it in style with a Superb 34-36-72 on this Par 36-36-72, 6,920 Yard layout. Curtis who is a popular favorite Here at his Home course charged from five strokes Back carving out a pressure packed 36-3773, one Over Par to overtake Don Reynolds by three shots in steamy even warmer conditions which he warded off with his umbrella most of the Way. Kathy Hansen did t get that sub 100 round she d hoped for All week but her 104 and 410 total was 32 shots better than either of her other Vii corps competitors. Once again the Story was the seniors Duel As Reynolds and Bob Bell of Vii corps started out the Day a stroke apart but Curtis stole All the Thunder. Bell bowed out relatively Early but Curtis and Reynolds fuelled it out almost to the end. Probably the most telling blow came at the Short 15th, a 147-Yard Par three where the pin was tucked in the front right Corner Tamali singly close to a big beckoning trap. Reynolds fresh from a Bird at the Long 14th and Back within a single stroke of Curtis who had led since the Lith Hole shoved his Iron shot into that trap. Curtis taking an eight Iron which was a club More than i thought i needed because the wind had started to blow dropped his shot four feet dead in Back of the pin. After Reynolds blasted out Long he had a slight downhill lie and the Sand appeared to be quite firm and missed his Par putt coming Back Curtis just barely got his putt in grunting loudly As the Ball stopped for an instant and then fell in. That put him up by three with three to go and though Reynolds made a valiant bid at the 16th, Curtis could not be stopped. The Long hitting Reynolds who begin spraying on the Back nine but scrambled Back repeatedly hit his drive under a tree on 16. Could Only Chip out but then belted a five Wood eight feet to the right of the pin. Carrying a big Sand trap that put the finish ing touches on Bell s last gasp bid. Curtis hit his third to the right 15 feet away and two putted for his Par. Reynolds. Needing a Bird desperately rimmed the cup and the Ball stayed out. Curtis then added a Brilliant Birdie at 17 where his second shot stopped a foot and a half away. Starting the round both Reynolds and Bell had troubles the former with a double at the Par three second and bogeys at nos. 1 and 5. Bell had a double at the first and a triple bogey eight at three where he hit two traps and another double at five put him momentarily put of the picture. Curtis meanwhile playing the course and not trying to worry about what the others were doing Strung together five straight pars with some Superb Shotak ing. Then at the Par five 520-Yard sixth when it appeared Reynolds had turned things around Curtis tied thing up. With the familiar Cigar clamped in his Mouth Reynolds pulled out his five Wood and belted his second shot onto the Green 35 feet away from the pin. Curtis drove into the Trees right had to Cross the Fairway to the left Side and barely got inside Rey nolds Ball but he Lay three. Reynolds putted too firmly going seven feet past and Curtis rammed his Ball at the Hole the Ball just toppling in on the last gasp for the Bird. Reynolds missed his putt and instead of a Bird and being two up. Was dead even with Curtis. Just As the momentum appeared to shift to Curtis after he hit his Iron on the Short seventh 3feet away the personable 48 year old lost his putting touch lie missed that pull and a pair of two footers on the next two holes Reynolds moved in front again at the eighth with a Par while Curtis was three putting for a bogey. After a Good drive at nine Reynolds approach looke Good but cleared the Green the trap beyond and went into the Trees still farther Back from where he took four to get Down. Curtis again missed a two footer that could have put him ahead As it was the two battlers went to the 10th dead even again. Both bogeyed the 10th, and at the Lith Reynolds begin to wander hitting far right getting Over the Trees but taking three to get Down from just off the Green. Curtis hit his approach just off the Green butt very close to the pin in the right front Corner chipped close and got the putt to move in front for Good. Seniors Champ Jim Curtis. Happiness a Bird at 17 both parred the 12th from off the Green and Curtis picked up another stroke at 13 with a routine Par while Reynolds snap hooked a drive into the Trees on the left Bank and Only with the help of a favourable ruling on his Contention that his Ball had rolled into an animal Hole the Ball was never found he salvaged the bogey. At the Long 14lh Reynolds birdied with two Brilliant shots after driving into the Trees to the right on the 595-Yard Par five cutting his deficit to a single shot once More. That s when Curtis hit that crucial eight Iron on the Short 15th to pull away for Good. Bell despite his horrendous Start once got Back within three with a bogey at eight despite an out of Bounds and Birds at nine 12 and 14. But a double at 15 where he chipped poorly took him put of it and the eight at 16 added to his misery. He wound up with an 87 and 10 shots behind the Leader. Haugen meanwhile had it All his own Way getting Birds at three with a two putt and six with a three footer to turn at two under. For the first time in the tournament 1 have been putting excellently he said on the 12th tee. Up to that Point his Putter saved four pars from eight feet at the second six feet at the ninth 10 feet at the 10th and five feet at the 12th. He closed his round with a wedge to within two feet for an almost tap in Bird at the 18th for his 72. In Between he missed a 3 it footer at 13 for a bogey missed the Green and bogeyed at 15, three putted for a Par at the Par five 16th and three putted again for a bogey at 17. But by then he had absolutely nothing to worry about. Hank Campbell of Vii corps won a sudden death playoff from Charley Demps of 21st support come for second place after both shot 306. Campbell had a Par on the first extra Hole while Demps missed a Short putt for what would have halved the Hole. Campbell had a 76, going out in one under 35, and Demps scrambled to an 80. John Stephens had a 77 for 307 and fourth place while Ken Hines shot a Fine 75 for 308 and fifth place. Hansen again was disappointed by her play netting Only a single Par in a round that included a 49 front Side and 55 Back with an eight and a nine. I just did t hit the Ball very Well she said. I hit it much better yesterday but today i just could t do for Curtis it was the first time in is years that he has been in serious tournament Competition. Vii corps Andretti wins German grand prix by Randy Barnetts a racing columnist Bockenheim Germany Sis America s Mario Andretti moved a big step closer to the world driving Champion ship Here sunday scoring an easy Victory in the German grand prix. South Africa s Jody Scheckter was second. 15 seconds Back in a Wolf Ford after a fighting drive from last place. Jac ques Laffite of France was third in a Ejgier Matra 12 seconds behind Scheckter. Andretti who had the pole position took the Lead from his Lotus Ford 1979 team mate Ronnie Peterson on Lap five and never looked Back. Ronnie knew 1 was ready to go ahead and he moved Over for me Andretti said after the race. "1 never had a moment s problem with the car and i used an especially hard tire compound because of the heat. Near the end i slowed Down a bit an Retli said because the engine ran cooler by dropping the revs and there was no Point in pushing it in this heat with the lead1 had " asked about his world championship chances. Aji Preiti said i feel far More optimistic now and it is looking Good " Only 11 cars from the 24 starters finished the 45-Lap 189-mile race in the torrid temperatures. The major dropout was Lotus no. 2 Driver Peterson who ran second to Andretti from Lap five until just nine laps from the end. Peterson s retirement with a broken gear Box ended Lotus bid for a fourth 1-2 sweep this season. Andretti s Victory Here was his fifth of the year and he now remains just two away from the tying the late Jim Clark s All time Mark of seven. Accidents eliminated several cars while the heat took its toll of engines. Out of the race earlier was world Cham Pion Niki Lauda of Austria with a blown engine on his Brabham Alfa Romeo. He was running third at the time but never appeared a threat to the front running lot scars. The highlight of the race was Scheckter s Superb drive to second place after lying at the Back of the Field at the end of the first Lap. The South african said that his fuel pump failed at the Start making him last away. Then he roared off and by half Dis Tance had battled his Way to fourth place. Scheckter took third after australian Alan Jones retired in his Williams Ford with engine trouble then moved to second with Peterson a exit. Finishing fourth was sex work Champl on Emerson Fittipaldi of Brazil in Coper. Sucar Ford while Didier Piroll of fran was fifth in a Tyrrell Ford. Sixth ass Hector Rebaque of Mexico in a private org entered Lotus Ford 78. Seventh was John Watson Alfa Romeo eighth Gilles Villeneuve Canada. Ferrari ninth Ricardo Patrese Italy in an arrows Ford 10th, Keke Rosberg Fin Landin a privately entered Wolf Ford j and Lith Rolf Stemmelen Germany in a " arrows Ford. I the most disappointed Driver in the race was Austria s Harald ertl who had passed Villeneuve s Ferrari for sixth place then retired with a blown engine with Only three laps left. Ertl drove an Ensign Ford. Fastest Lap was set by Peterson who j zipped Over the 4,2-mile Bockenheim Cir-1 Cuit in the record time of one minute 55.621 seconds an average Speed of 131.06 Miles per hour. Andretti recorded his Victory in hour. 28.1 minutes at an average Speed 130.44 Mph. Ever nearer the 1978 Crown Andretti now has a commanding 54 Points while Peterson follows with 36, with Only five grand prix races remaining in the season
