European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 14, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes thursday september 14, 1978 Bresli Jimmy new York when i had the misfortune of growing up in the newspaper business i worked for a Hearst newspaper in new York and i lived in Queens directly across the Street from a Man who was a Pressman on the same paper. We were Friendly his daughter was our baby Sitter and we went to parties in the neighbourhood together now and then. I always saw him on saturday nights. There was a sunday paper to put out and when i d finish working on it somewhere about 8 p.m., i d go into a place on a Corner from the paper a bar called Mutchie a and have a couple of Beers and my neighbor and Friend whose name was Frank Ehmer always would be press run had already started and once this was accomplished once these heavy Lead semicircular plates were lifted onto the Rol lers once the wide sheets of paper climbed to the ceiling and Dove Down to the rollers once the noise became so loud that you could not talk then the bar at Mutchie s would be crowded with Pressman wearing these Square paper hats. You need Only a few inky sentries in a pressroom once the presses Are rolling. I loved the saturday nights. The owner of the bar Mutchie would be in great humor be cause the Pressman two and three deep at the bar could drink almost As much As House painters of which no throats can possibly be made Mutchie so vulnerable to a loan or to cashing a bad Check that it was almost embarrassing to take the Money from him. And saturday night was the big night for my Friend Frank Ehmer too. He was the pressroom Mechanic which meant he stayed All night Long and when the press run was Over at Dawn he still had Many hours ahead of him stripping and repairing press units. All of his work was done on extra time overtime double time whatever it was Pressman received As Premium pay at that time. One thing i know it was not a Small amount for working Man. It was More than i was getting for putting out the actual paper itself the d see him the next afternoon sitting on his stoop having a can of Beer talking to his wife tired from saturday night but secure because of it. The one night with its built in overtime pay was the i beam of his living. It was that Way for a lot of people. All Over Queens and out on Long Island there were families whose lives entered on jobs at news papers jobs that were alien to the Basic product the news but jobs that paid More than most of the news jobs the truck Driver made More than the sportswriter whose name was splashed on the Side of the truck. I Don t think anybody thought about it for Long. We d go to the place like Mutchie s and have a few Beers with the Pressman and printers and truck Drivers and they acted As if we All were work ing for the same place with a common Pur life changed. There were strikes by production people. The newspaper Guild sup Posedly for reporters was in one of them but the Guild is a Union of elevator operators and computer attendants. With each strike by non news people papers folded and readers disappeared Hearst paper i worked on folded. The Pressman and truck Drivers had places to go to. Most of the reporters had nothing. Another paper i was on the Herald Tribune folded. And then a third the world journal Tribune went under. The Cost of putting out the news was found everywhere but in the news depart ment itself. There was technology to replace much of the production methods but the unions fought the technology. And their fight was putting me out on the now there is another newspaper strike in new York this one of Pressman and you go about disturbed and disoriented and always trying to remain alone As much As possible be cause of the ceaseless comments As unvarying As a Finger poking the same part of the Arm for hours that people night on walking into a restaurant in Queens i had to pass through the bar. I knew most of the people in the place and each of them turned around and Felt compelled to say the same thing but Only in his own voice. Need a Job huh out of a Job he out of a Job this week hah " How s it Goin with no work is this Mustache one for the Book of records Belgrade a Farmer Bozo Korica of the Village of Zogoric in Western Yugoslavia has a 27vz-Inch-Long Mustache the Yugo slav news Agency Tan Jug has reported. The report said elderly men in the Region with the longest and most dignified mustaches Are the most wears his Over the ears with ends tied together at the Back of his neck. Then in the Back in the restaurant part a Man got up and came Over and introduced himself. I work at the daily news too he said. I m a Pressman he gave me his name. I remember the first name was Eddie but i was too bothered by his saying i work at the daily news too to concentrate on his name. I said to myself work at the news you Don t do any news work so therefore we Are not in the same now the Pressman said to me i guess it could be a Long i guess so i re trying to break our Union he like us i said. Then it s going to be a Long one he said. Could be i said. I went Over and sat Down by myself. The years do that to you. He seemed like an open warm Guy and i was pretty sure that if others were to meet him and then meet me they d like the Man Well ahead of me. But i did t want to talk much to him on this night. I know that his Job Pressman can be unhealthy because of the noise and fumes. And that the Feather bedding in a pressroom was started by newspapers who wanted to put weaker ones out of business and now suddenly the newspapers want to change it All and re Duce the people in the pressroom by half. And i also know that newspaper managements Are As Lousy As they always were. A Boss is a Boss. Kay Graham of the Washington Post is a lib eral at a cocktail party. But she is a Boss and she found a Way to throw the Pressman s Union out of her building in Washington. I know All this. But i also know that paying Many people to tend to printing presses is too costly now for the news business. A couple of years ago the people who set the Type the printers finally had to sign a contract that called for reduction by attrition and the introduction of new technology. The new York times says that if it were not for this contract the paper would have ended its foreign cover age. And i know that the Only Way to insure the business of daily printed news continuing at the place for which i work in new York is to do the same thing in All the other places where the packaging of the news product is produced. Bring in the computers and spend the Money where it s supposed to be spent in the news there can be no More friends in Square paper hats on those big saturday nights. The Cost comes right out of a reporter s pocket. C Chicago Tribune . Ann Landers dear Ann Landers my Hus band and i have been married 14 years. It was wrong for the Start and i knew it after two years but we went ahead and had children hoping it might help. Now they Are eleven nine and six years. Last december Fred be came involved with a divorced woman in our social Circle. This was his third affair that i knew of and i thought it would blow Over if i remained Calm and pre tended not to notice. This is How i had dealt with the others but i misjudged the situation. Last week he asked me for a divorce. I am no longer in love with Fred he killed my Faith and Trust Many years ago. To complicate matters we Are Catholic. I realize the Church has softened its position on divorce but it still bothers m writing to you because i need to know what you think divorce will do to our children. I confided in my Mother and she insists that i owe it to them to keep our marriage together regardless. Mother pointed out what has happened to the Chil Dren of some of our divorced friends. I countered with exam Ples of children from Happy Homes whose lives were just As badly messed up. Truancy drugs runaways arrests for Bur Glary and two suicides i am terribly torn Ann land ers and i desperately need some guidance from an unbiased party. Please Tell me what you know about this subject i am puzzled dear puzzled i am going to quote from a Book which i believe can be enormously helpful. It is living with divorce by Kath Leen Sheridan. Publisher Thom As More press 180 n. Wabash ave., Chicago 111. 60601 Price $5.95. No marriage should be sustained for the Sake of the Chil Dren. What colossal damage has been inflicted on children by the phony altruistic decisions of parents who decided to stay to Gether for the kids no child de serves to carry the Burden of such scapegoating. Unfortunately a great number of adults Are now in therapy attempting to Cope with conflicts that began with constant arguments be tween their parents tearful wrenching scenes by a Mother who said if it weren t for you i would have left your father Long ago this is not to suggest that children whose parents divorce suffer no ill effects. They do. They Are affected by their parents life decisions and will need help in understanding and cop ing. But they should not have to pay in terms of emotional health for their parents unhappiness. They should not have to be raised in an atmosphere where parents barely tolerate each other Bicker belittle or Battle where one Parent promotes a conspiracy against the other where a Good front is put on for relatives and friends or where unhappiness and disillusionment Are the pre dominant behavioural the Book deals with 1 deciding 2 leaving 3 being left 4 familiarity family friends and 5 being alone. I heartily recommend it As a practical sen sible and supportive guide for parents who share your problem. C Field enterprises inc
