Papale became a Folk hero among Phila Delphia pro football followers because he realized one of those Walter Mitty dreams. He never played College football tried out for the eagles As a free agent and made the squad. The 195-Pound Papale was used As a Spe Cial team player developed into a devas Tating Tacker on Kickoff returns and played occasionally As a wide receiver. In two seasons he caught one pass for 15yards. Papale is getting a second Chance be cause of an injury in sunday s the eagles new Orleans game to kick returner Wally Henry who will be lost for the season. John Sciarra will take Henry s place on kick returns. Coach Dick Vermeil Felt he could use some help at wide receiver so another wide receiver Harold Carmichael would t have to work so hard in practice. So Papale was recalled. Papale said he was sorry that Henry had to suffer a broken leg for him to get another Chance but he left no doubt about his excitement at rejoining the eagles. No i Don t feel like i m on Cloud nine said Papale. I m just Happy to be Back. I m real excited about the Opportunity to play again. I expect to be a special Teamer Vince Papale. Fan Media favorite and maybe a catastrophe receiver. I Don t expect it to Hurt my future in Vermeil s decision will be extremely popular with the fans who cheered a Pale s special team efforts almost As loudly As they did a touchdown. Papale was a school teacher who became an nil Rookie at the age of 30, when most players Are beginning to think about their pensions. He was elected Spe Cial teams Captain by his teammates last season his second with the eagles. Papale also is a television sportscaster in Philadelphia and was Active with the eagles in their fight for leukaemia Campaign. He is much sought after As a speaker at local functions. Papale excelled As a trackman at St. Joseph s College Philadelphia which did not have a football team. He gave up olym Pic decathlon aspirations to concentrate on football spending two years with the Phil Adelphia Bell of the defunct world football league before trying out for the eagles. Realizing Papale s popular Appeal and the Adverse reaction the end s release would bring Vermeil went out of his Way to make the aug. 23 Cut Don t think you Ever replace a person like Vince Papale said Vermeil. I Don to think there is a More Loyal Eagle anyone who appreciated being in football More than that
