Law Dean has to stick up for crime career advantages Indianapolis up crime does pay better than Small business since it requires less education and capital and since the Odds of being convicted even if caught Are minimal. That was the word of or. Nicholas n. Kittrie Dean of the american University Law school at a National criminality col Quiam attended by crime experts from throughout the country. Certainly neither incapacitation nor deterrence can be counted upon much if there is a Chance of Only nearly 1 in 20 that the offender will be Given his just desserts " Kittrie said. When 19 offenders do not earn their just desserts criminality remains a Low risk business. Crime certainly has greater Appeal than Many other Small businesses which require greater education or Capi Tal. Criminality in fact does he said the courts provide More form than function. Troops airlifted across the Atlantic to defend Europe will have to fight Jet lag before they face the enemy and the array is look ing for a solution to the problem. Jet lag is the fatigue and disorientation travellers feel going from one time zone to another said maj. Or Gregory Balenky. The Speed of modern air travel creates the problem. Cell metabolism or hormone production which affect most of the body s vital organs tick along smoothly until jarred out of time by Lack of sleep or sudden change of schedule said Balenky a psychiatrist with the Walter Reed Institute of research in Washington . Balenky is Here to study effects of Jet lag on men of the 2nd in 37th Field arty. They flew to Europe from fort Sill okla., on four Days notice in a rare test of the Speed with which nato can respond to crisis across the sea. In most cases soldiers must go to work immediately upon arrival with no Opportunity to rest such As the civilian travel or Balenky said. In some cases the Soldier May even be required to fight within hours of touching the doctor said it takes four to seven Days for the body to adjust to a new time zone. Military experts say future wars May not last much longer than that. Balenky said studies have been done on the effects of Jet lag but not on the possibility of helping persons get Over it Quick s what the army Hopes to do to find a Way to get soldiers up to Peak performance As quickly As possible after flying Halfway around the world he said. The army has ruled out use of drugs to help keep soldiers awake. They work but Only insofar As they keep you awake the doctor said. If you Are on amphetamines you can t sleep when you have the Chance your judgment is impaired since you Are usually too enthusiastic and it takes some time to recover from effects of the Balenky said amphetamines were used during the Vietnam conflict but Only for persons returning from patrol. He said the pills never were used intentionally before a firefight. Jet lag and Lack of sleep affect a per son s judgment and mood. He said persons suffering those maladies would become irritable and inefficient and later even indifferent to what is happening around them. The worst time of Day for someone who has not slept for about 16 hours is about 4 to 6a.m. Depending on How far he has travelled 4 . To his body May be 10 or 11 . Local time Balenky said. The two hour Low is referred to As the circadian trough a time when the body is at a physical and psychological ebb. At the same time the next Day. The body enters its second circadian trough. If a person has not had at least a Little sleep he will feel absolutely terrible hell be weak irritable slow witted hardly in fighting condition the major said. Balenky said few persons get through a third circadian trough without nearing col lapse. It s just a personal observation Balenky said but it seems the older soldiers say 30 to 45 suffer the least from Jet lag. Perhaps they Are just More expert the 2/37th is handling Jet lag Well the doctor reported. In fact i am surprised he said. But they left the states in High spirits and they Are the 2/37th study is a preliminary step to a More exhaustive Experiment two other doctors will undertake with brigade 75 sol Diers next month Balenky said. The final study if approved by Usa eur would involve units not yet identified. . Hatcher writes for the Public affairs office at fort Sill
