The Church s Ori gins Date Back to 673 when Queen Etheldreda founded a religious House in Ely. The monastery she founded was later destroyed by invading Danes but in 970 the Benedictines began constructing a Church in Ely. Remnants of the Norman Church built by the Benedictines can still be seen such As the elaborate carved doorways. In 1322 the entire Church was in the Norman style witha Square Tower in the Center. The Tower later collapsed and it is the replacement that draws tourists to the Church today. Alan de Walsingham planned the present Octagon and intern Tower. By building a Tower of Wood using eight l Large beams he was Able to Span a Width of 74 feet at a height of 86 feet. Each beam is 63 feet in length More than 3 feet wide and almost 3 feet in depth. The beams Are supported by radiating timbers. Flying buttresses behind each of four Large windows in the Church support the tremendous weight of the Wood. What de Walsingham achieved was an amazing architectural feat for the time. Today As Well As yesterday the lantern Tower is an astonishing sight.
