Wall Street took heart from a labor department report that consumer prices Rose by a moderate 0.6 percent in August on the heels of a 0.5 percent upswing in july. A gust s annual inflation rate of 7.2 percent was the second lowest of the year. Treasury Secretary Michael Blumen Thal said further action must be taken to combat inflation but he predicted a considerable moderation in the Price spiral during the remainder of the year. President Carter pledged a very Strong anti inflation policy and urged the Federal Reserve Board to Stop driving up interest rates by pulling in the credit reins. Although the fed tightened credit to curb inflation and prop up the Dollar abroad Carter and Many economists expressed fear that the relentless Rise in in Terest rates could produce a recession. First National Bank of Chicago hiked its prime lending rate for corporate borrow ers a Quarter Point to 9% percent the highest level since january 1975 in a move that spread throughout the banking Industry by week s end.
