Most of the letters i have read slate the main Factor a the Low pay. I agree partially with you on this Point but Only partially. If you would think about the situation you Are in i assure that Many of you would agree with my Point of View. In my 12 years of service in the Marine corps and army i pc spent a great Deal of time away from my family including two combat Tours in Vietnam and two other unaccompanied Tours overseas. Now i m Back in Germany to spend a Long tour and my family is still stateside while i la sit Here for months waiting for count the unaccompanied overseas Tours and add in All the Field time away from Home even when your family is in country with you and you have one individual and family who arc tired of the Long separations. I m sure there arc Many other people in the service who arc As tired of this As i am and ready to Chuck it All As i am. The pay is hard to live on but i could manage a lot better if the army allowed me reasonable amount of Lime with my family. Also longer stateside Tours would be a big help. By the Way if anyone could Tell me How 1 can resign and go Back to a Normal everyday Way of life i wish they would let me know. I think 12 years has been Long enough. A sgt. This must be considered in Light of the require ments of military on spoon feeding students As a student at Frankfurt american High school i have first hand experience with the feelings of both students and teachers. By working closely with the teach ers and my fellow classmates i have come to realize and grow sincerely concerned with the deteriorating attitude toward Edu cation in the Public school system. Through student apathy and the Lack of foresight or consideration on the part of the teachers most students now expect if not demand to be taught by a method known spoon feeding describes the method of teaching in which Little or no room is left for individual self inspired and self taught education experience or attempted Progress. A teacher who practices spoon feeding explains each and every detail of his assign ments and leaves no Chance for the student to use his personal ingenuity or creativity. The worst fact about spoon feeding How Ever is he fact that most students Are will ing to accept this method of teaching not realizing or not caring that later in life there won t be anyone to take them by the hand and Lead them through the problems of the adult responsible world. Many students in order to receive a pass ing Mark accept any idea of his teacher As fact without question or proof. Spoon feed ing brainwashing Ana the fact that few teachers will allot any responsibility to their students is stripping today s youth of their Chance for individual creativity and new ideals. These methods of teaching threaten to mechanize the world s youth and end any Hope of Progress and ingenuity. If these methods persist we will All be come Blank sheets or paper impressionable Only by the thoughts of others and incapable of individual formulation of new Ideal thus ending the Progress of Man. The responsibility of improving today s Quality of education lies in the hands of teachers students and parents. Teachers must Grant their students a moderate Mea sure of individual responsibility Fidelity and the Chance for personal creativity. Students must learn to refuse and revolt against authoritarian educators arid to question and explore the world on their own. Which is truly the original purpose of Public schooling. Finally parents must exhibit More inter est and concern and Grant More motivation toward the educational and social Progress of their children. Parents must earn to guide their children out of the fantasy work of drugs and Back to the reality of this dog cat dog society where education the key to Success. Cooperation is the key to the betterment of education and the key to our future. A. Scott Ottens Darmstadt Germany
