By Georgia Dullea new York times his was one of those Rainy ragged weekends when mothers of Small children fantasize about running away from Home. Linda Schreiber had five Small children including 18-month-old quadruplets who cried in counterpoint and showed no signs of napping that Day. She did More than fantasize. She really ran out the door of her Brick colonial House Down the Street away from the responsibilities of the Mother business. She ran in the rain for two and a half Miles that first Day. Than she ran Home. Back in the House she recalls feeling breathless and muscle tired but her husband was smiling and coping with the babies and the bottles and the diapers. It was Jim Schreiber a lawyer whose weekends revolved around two mile runs and Tennis tournaments who suggested that his wife a classic no athlete run around the lock to Case her restlessness on that Rainy sunday. Now almost six years later 35-year-old Linda Schreiber runs 10 to 12 Miles a Day and up o 23 Miles when training for a Marathon. In the 1978 new York City race her time 2 54 33 placed her Lith in a Field of More than 1,000 women. There in Greenwich conn., her Small and determined figure forever Bobbing along the pavement in heat Waves and snowstorms has prompted other women to follow. A neighbor the tamed runner James fix Calls her an imperturbable others Call her which As it happens is the title of a Book that Linda Schreiber has written with Joanne Stang Marathon mom the wife and Mother running Book Houghton Mifflin. In it Schreiber draws on her own experiences As Well As those of other suburban mothers who Are exercising their bodies and their right to they Are a highly inventive group these running mothers especially the ones without baby Sitters. A Mother of three measured the driveway with the odometer of the family car and there she runs while the Chil Dren runs in circles around the House ear tuned to the baby s cry. And Many have taken to parking the Carriage at the Edge of the High school running track. Baby Sitters were less of a problem for Schreiber who has a live in Mother s Helper,.a part time House keeper and a husband who does t mind sitting while the ran. What complicated Schreiber s running career at least in the Early years was an attack of Mother s guilt. Even though the ran Only 25 minutes at first and even though the children were supervised she Felt constant guilt he said despite the fact that running was making her a stronger healthier Mellower wife and she certainly looked Mellow the other Day. Three of the quads dropped put fairly Early but Samantha and then Zachary finished in Good form. Schreiber does t think mothers should run marathons not unless they Are really motivated to do so. As she says in the Book follow your instincts. No one should feel defensive if she does t care to race. Having the Freedom to race does t mean you re obliged to for the runner of course the Marathon Means pain. Pitting yourself against pain and overcoming it to accomplish your goal is an integral part of the Chal Lenge of racing Schr Cibor says. The More you strive to realize your potential the More you try for maximum performance the More pain you ii mothers who no Are often struck by the analogy bet Eta Marathon miming and childbirth she said because of the common cements of pain Aad fear of the unknown. They Day after she ran her first Marathon she visited a Cousin in the maternity Ward. Her Cousin asked what the Marathon was like and Schreiber laughed and said hard work. The closest Damn thing to giving when she talks of such pain when she talks about her injuries an operation on a Neuroma a painful inflammation of the sensory nerve Between the toes kept her out of the 1979 new York City Marathon even when she talks about the blisters that she ritually anoints with Petroleum Jelly and wraps in Lamb s Wool it is hard to under stand what sets her to running As soon As the school bus leaves. She is a Phi Beta Kappa with a master s decree inthe literati of religions and part of the motivation is the Spir Ihui aspect the realization of her own potential another part Oit is the Solitude.
