at Mcdonalds and take notes with a 49cent Bic surly and unresponsive to the soldiers Are not impressed with titles or bloodlines or your old school most of them have never worn a tie in their they live in a Jungle and Are constantly scrounging for food for their they have the killer instinct and would just As soon Dine on your carcass As the next Public the most dangerous of All the soldiers Are the females assigned to cover social fun most of them appear to be younger than your and Are selected for their innocent looks and helpless although they always appear flustered and about to they have mastered the Art of taking notes with one hand while putting on lipstick with the women assigned to cover the social scene Are trained to hover near their Quarry and overhear conversations not meant for their Many of them have taken lipreading and can pick up your remarks at 30 the big news in Washington is usually made at and while most readers of papers Are sceptical of what appears on the front no one questions the facts about what actually took place at a when reported in a gossip the electronic mafia is something else you have to keep in mind that every to reporter sent out on a Story has Only one goal in and that is to get on the air that in order to do they have to provoke you into saying some thing and if you dont say anything of be satisfied with 30 seconds of you bumping your head on your the main difference Between the printed press mafia and the electronic soldiers is that when a Story appears in a newspaper about something you you can always deny but if you deny something attributed to you on they will show you deny ing and then replay the tape of you say ing now that you understand How the Washington Media mafia it is up to you to decide How to handle but dont make the mistake of threaten ing the after they have written something you dont by saying you know Bill or Katharine or Arthur Sulzberger or Otis Chandler cause in almost All they c los Angeles times Short life is predicted for plastic heart patient Salt Lake City up the first human to receive a new plastic artificial heart developed at the University of Utah probably will not survive More than a few the chairman of a key review Board we Hope people Arent unduly optimistic about the first said Ernst a pathologist who Heads the re View Board for research with human sub the pioneering surgery will be performed by William a cardiac surgeon who has implanted several artificial hearts in calves at a University research one named has been alive for eight months on one of the plastic learn a lot about How the blood flows and How the lungs work in response to the artificial letters to the editor potential re enlistees turned off in this letter i would like to address one of the army greatest problems today the retention of trained during my few years As an army member i have observed a great Lack of concern and enthusiasm for the position of reenlistment no at company and detachment this Lack of concern and enthusiasm is not Only in the reenlistment no himself but with the unit administration As in All too Many cases units appoint a re enlistment no solely because it is required that they have one and consequently the position is assigned to an individual who a Doest want the or b already has so Many duties that he cannot effectively perform the or c has been determined by the unit administration to be incompetent to fill any other or d is looking for a skate position and consequently does not effectively fill the due to this we Are constantly finding the firs term soldiers who have been interested in re enlisting and approached their unit reenlistment no with some of the simplest Basic questions concerning what is available to them to enhance their career and were Given a variety of evasive the favorite being ill Check on that and get Back with their epitaph should still or worse the reenlistment no will present a dismal picture of the re enlistees future within the i recently reenlisted for three years and during my Contact with the reenlistment personnel i was Given a lengthy discourse on How stupid i was for re enlisting when i was capable of a much greater future on the incidents and attitudes such As i have just described Are by no Means uncommon within the Lowe level unit reenlistment positions and it Doest take much of either to discourage a potential reenlisted from re enlisting i will concede that the majority of reenlistment personnel at battalion and group that i have Are doing a satisfactory it must be pointed out in most they Are working at that one Job Only and they come under closer scrutiny than do Lowe level reenlistment unfortunately by the time a potential reenlisted comes in Contact with the reenlistment personnel at this level he has already made up his mind one Way or having spent 15 years living and working in civilian before joining the and having worked at a variety of some of which were considered excellent both in pay and i can truthfully say there is not a position out there that i would Trade for my army the More i learn about the army and everything that is not Only to the potential but to All of to further our the More convinced i am that it is you can be what you want to be in the As a first termer looks across the years his future in the army is limited Only by his own i would be the the last person to contend that there Are no negative aspects of an army career but i am convinced that the positive aspects far outweigh the the Lowe level reenlistment personnel Are in the Best position of All reenlistment personnel within the due the Day today to sell the army to potential re 365 Days a it is their responsibility to keep informed of everything the army has to Given the products that they have to it is absolutely in my that a reenlistment no could be anything less than super in this letter i have not meant to be sarcastic or unduly As i am aware that there Lowe level reenlistment cos out there who Are doing an outstanding however there Are Many who Are in my opinion if the army leaders As a whole would place More emphasis on the lower level unit reenlistment position and if commanders would work to ensure that their re enlistment no is knowledgeable and the army retention problem would be greatly Harry Wells Germany not Happy with 18month Tours this letter was written to the Best of my but i had to delete Many swear it is my feeling that i sincerely got the raw end of the Deal by the 18month i know a lot of people feel the same its really depressing to see other soldiers come Here from the states and Only have to spend 12 or 13 months in Germany while we came straight from advanced infantry training and Are Here for the rest of our three year withheld Germany i am a single Soldier in Germany and Ive been Here for two i to say the very angry that i have to still spend a total of 33 months Here and All these other people got the 18month shortened tour except the people that joined the army when i did in its really a great morale Booster to see these people come in your unit two years after you did and still leave Germany about the same time you the 18 month tour change is the Best thing the army done in a Long Only irs not that great because it didst affect me at so and a lot of other people in my unit would like to thank you for forgetting All about us Over Well do the same for you when it comes time for withheld Germany editors note two Larry management actions 1st replies All new policies or programs As Well As changes to old policies and programs must have an effective at us Reurs request the army began on to reduce the overseas tour of firs term enlistees to 18 the first Usa eur Soldier will re turn to the upon completion of an 18 month tour in april All three year firs term enlistees who arrived in usar eur prior to will have their Tours adjusted in proportion to when they this reduction is
