European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 24, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse April 1988 the stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers dear Ann Landers As an upper mid die class suburban i Hope i can offer some in sight into the grow ing number of teen age especially among those who live in the More affluent i have known some teenagers who took their and 1 be Lieve the major causes arc As follows the pressure to succeed academically and later financially is really these teens arc forced to strive for acceptance to Ivy league if they dont get into Stanford or Amherst they feel like its especially Tough if their fathers went to these life in the affluent suburbs is often Lonc by and the parents arc involved in demanding travel a and leave the mothering and fathering to paid they almost never do things As a the fact that the majority of teenage suicides occur in affluent areas such As Westchester county and Long Island rather than in the working neighbourhoods like Queens and Staten Island must mean that most Rich who appear to have enjoy life a lot less than poor i dont know any of the answers in Only but i just thought id put some of my thoughts Down on paper for whatever they might be name in Winnetka dear i believe you Are right about some Rich kids not having much the greatest pleasures in life come from the inside what we do for achieving some thing makes Young people feel Good about it builds Confidence and self expensive trips and credit cards handed Over by parents have Little value after a in they become and now about suicide it is the second biggest killer among the lsto24yearold group in the United accidents Are it has not always been this something has your letter suggests teenage suicide is the fault of the i in my opinion easy Access to drugs is a major Many teens overdose accidentally by mixing drugs with thirty years ago kids didst fool around with min altering substances like Quad it want they had but teens rarely drank themselves to i also believe movies and to figure prominently in teenage too often death is glamorized and made to seem exciting and Young people who Are emotionally unstable have a ten Dency to imitate what they see portrayed on the they dont realize that death is we Are learning More about this sub the How to recognize them and possibly save potential there Are no surefire but of this i am certain there always have been and always will be people who Are emotionally fragile and break under the Strain of lifes while others Are Able to live through you might Call it the survival Why some people fall into one category and not the other is still a i dont pretend to know the reminder All letters to the editor must contain full printed name and address of the writer and must be we will with hold your name on in the lunchroom and while they Are on the playground during the lunch for the past several aides have been hired to provide the supervision of the children during the lunch the care and supervision have been and continue to be woefully Lakenheath elementary is one of the largest Dod elementary schools in Europe with More than Only six aides supervise this Large number of Chil Dren during the on hour and 45minute lunch period at times up to 900 children can be in the lunchroom and on the play the six aides Are generally divided with three in the cafeteria and three on the anyone can easily see the ratio of Aidt students is ridiculous this situation is underscored by the Large number of minor to sem serious injuries incurred by the children at lunchtime on the frightful bullying of smaller children occurs frequently and is Seldom Cor Gui voiced by Many other is that the number of aides is about half what is needed most that the aides arc not a respected this problem of who will supervise the Chil Dren during the lunchtime is tearing apart our to and creating irreversible animosities be tween teachers and parents to the detriment of our the problem has been discussed exhaust edly at the local it has been discussed by the school advisory com a number of times during to executive Board meetings and general membership and also one none Between parents and the schools no workable solution to the problem has yet we Are concerned parents who want to see our children adequately do other Dod elementary schools have this same prob Lem has any school reached a solution what is the Dodds administrations Posi Tion on this Type of situation and what does the Dodds administration recommend to their school principals on How to resolve the predicament we would like to see in print some an Swers to these questions by the Dodds and please keep us Anonymous to insure no retribution for our withheld Raf England editors note we received two replies to this the first is from Robert executive services Atlantic Dod dependents schools the supervision of lunchrooms and play grounds within Dodds has and will continue to be a responsibility that tasks the managerial abilities of our school each school within the Dodds system is and school administrators Are afforded a great Deal of flexibility in providing for lunchroom and playground the result is that each school provides for the service in a manner in direct correlation to the local Community degree of involvement and level of the office of dependents schools has established general policies in regard to lunch room they Are unless funds Are specifically appropriated for onsite student meal facility super i such activities May not result in addition Al costs to the at the present supervision of onsite assigned As a reason Able duty for teachers and is reflected in the standardization teacher position we appreciate this Opportunity to respond to parents school administrators at All Levels of management within Dodds at lactic Region Welcome the involvement of parents in providing for excellence in the entire educational while we believe that parental concerns Are Best handled at the school parents should feel Welcome to address their concerns to All Levels of administration within the Dodds the second reply is from David mor Deputy Lakenheath Ameri can elementary school Lakenheath elementary school grades k5 is the largest school in the Atlantic because of its there Are Many challenges that Are unique to this specific educational the lunchrooms and playground activities Are two such Chal supervision does exist in the cafeteria As Well As on the there Are rather than monitors who work the noontime school administrators Are normally present on a daily walk through basis a school Counselor is working with the monitors in the cafeteria two High school work study students assist the monitors and to supplement the seven there is a select group of students who com prise the Lakenheath elementary school safety these 20 responsible boys and girls help to oversee the playground South Africa policies denounced i am writing in response to the deplorable conditions and human rights violations the South african government is carrying out against its in response to recent comments by Botha and his regime that Black South Afri cans should come together with Whites in South Africa to help Weed out what he Calls Messen Gers of terror who Are causing turmoil the proposals Are not Only foolish but what Botha Doest understand is that Blacks in South Africa do not Only want to come together with White South africans and work they also want Justice most of in recent the Botha regime has reiterated its stance on keeping the Iron fist of apartheid around the Black South at All they if it is to must be gradual and from the looks of the situation one will have to stand in line to get human if there Are messengers of terror in South then the government must first look within it sown Black South africans cannot forget the Many deaths that have been brought about by the South african and accept at the same lip service about change from a regime that promises very Little or on a piecemeal this is lip service that human rights will be passed out to human beings who were born with How deplore As an american i agree with the recent sanctions the american government has declared against the South african government in trying to get that government to conform to the democratic ideals they say they stand and most of to let them know the american governments stand on human rights in sure that most americans do not believe in such antidemocratic such As supper Sion of individual rights and Freedom and kill Ings that the South african government is carrying out against its such anti democratic ideals and an authoritarian govern ment can Only Lead to More blood being and the Botha regime must surely realize now that democratic ideals and Freedom to Blacks in South Africa Are More powerful than the pow Der Keg he and his constituents arc sitting Drake Germany they observe and cooperate with the monitors and assist in maintaining discipline and As a As Well As an safety of students on the playground is of utmost it must be understood that accidents do and will statistics from the school health office indicate the number of accidents that do occur Are nor Mally minor and the number is not beyond the Norm when compared to schools of Simi Lar it must be noted that the educational administrators Are constantly seeking ways to improve existing with input from the Sac parents and recent changes have resulted which should make the monitoring of Chil Dren during lunchtime recess even better in the unsigned there Are two Points of subjectivity that must be discussed one the authors the aides Are not a respected if this were it would follow that additional no matter the would not improve the existing its anticipated and by school that children Are sent to school having been taught the principles of respect for the Dodds school person Nel realize that the overwhelming number of parents teach their children this very important two in any educational constructive criticism if warranted is enc our any concerned Parent can be assured that the schools operate on the premise of what is Best for the the thought that retribution would be taken against a student is an unthinkable and unfounded Assumption that must be dismissed for productive dialogue to continue Between parents and the european edition Usa
