Elena upgraded to major7 status Cedar key Fla. A unpredictable Elena strengthened to a major Hurri Cane with sustained winds of 120 Mph sunday and swung Back on a track to the Northwest and gov. Dob Graham ordered a Mcmond evacuation of coastal areas of the Florida Panhandle. Hurricane warnings were extended West Ward to Bay St. Louis miss. Warnings had been posted Over the Cen trial Gulf coast last week and thousands of people were evacuated before the storm veered toward Florida s West coast and hailed Tor two Days. Residents of the Panhandle had been evacuated Friday then were allowed to re turn saturday when Elena veered toward the state s Central West coast where an Esti mated million people were evacuated. Earlier sunday Graham had ordered National guard troops to keep those Al ready evacuated but growing restless from returning to the coast. Elena had been wobbling 80 Miles West Southwest of Cedar key on the Gulf of Mexico before it started moving sunday afternoon the National Hurricane Center reported. On saturday the storm s Eye had been As close As 55 Miles from Cedar key which bore the Brunt of the storm s outlying wind and High water As heavy rain and tornadoes hammered other parts of the state. Tide five to six feet above Normal inundated streets in the evacuated town. One Man was killed saturday on the cast coast when winds toppled a tree onto his car and a second Man died of a heart at tack across the state in a Tampa shelter officials said. More than 100 Homes were destroyed or damaged by tornadoes spawned by Elena. In the Tampa Bay area South of Cedar key red Cross officials said National guard trucks were taking food and supplies to 121 shelters housing 200,000 people. Florida Power corp. Officials reported some 72,700 customers were without Power sunday. Meanwhile coast guard cutters were Rushing to the Aid of two ships disabled in the heavy seas. The 400-foot freighter master charge with 24 people aboard was Drifting without Power off Tampa Bay toward the Eye of the Hurricane said Oast guard spokesman Dan Waldschmidt. A fishing boat with two aboard was reported taking on water off fort Myers to the South. Jacksonville had 8.86 inches of rain in 24 hours including 2.95 inches in six hours sunday morning. They moved immediately to a work station while Astro naut Mike lounge operating from a Remote position inside the Cabin mane Vered the satellite on the end of the robot . The Craft remained on the  overnight. After switching on the Power to the electrical connections they made saturday the astronauts disengaged the satellite and spun it up for release. Deployment came three hours after sunday s walk began. The firing is being delayed to give ground controllers a Chance to Man Euver syncom 3 in the Sun to thaw out its fuel. Some of the fuel has Frozen during the four months the satellite has drifted through space As a derelict. If the fuel docs not thaw properly the rocket could explode when the firing signal is sent. Syncom 3 failed when an automatic timing device did not work after the spacecraft was released by another shuttle Crew in april. During a Scvcn-hou., eight minute spacewalk saturday one minute longer than the previous record Van Hof ten and Fisher electronically bypassed the timing device by running a wire harness Between two electrical outlets on the Side of the satellite. This will allow the ground station to Send signals to the Craft. The astronauts also attached a Battery pack which enabled Fisher to raise a 7-foot Omni directional Antenna which will receive the signals from the ground
