River loses sediment study says Washington a folks who want to beat their feet in the Mississippi mud will find less of it available than in the past a new government study shows. Sediment discharged by the mighty River has been reduced by half in the past 35 Yean and this May be a Factor in receding shorelines in the Mississippi Delta the . Geological Survey reports. A study of the River s sediment was published As part of the Agency s recent annual National water summary. It said the dra Matic drop in sediment carried by the River occurred following construction of several Large dams on the Missouri River in the 1950s and 1960s. Agency hydrologists said the Missouri has been the major supplier of sediment to the River while the upper Mississippi and Ohio River systems contribute Large volumes of water but far less solid matter. In cases like the Mississippi dams trap sediment in the reservoirs they impound said Philip Cohen the chief hydrologist. The water that flows past the dams carries less sediment so that the River has a higher capacity to erode downstream. At the River Oclita instead of the River depositing Sedi ment the Ocean Waves and tide Wash away the smaller sediment to better understand what is happening Agency scientists this month Are mapping the sediment being deposited by the missis Sippi in the Gulf of Mexico where under water landslides can endanger structures such As Oil rigs. Just because certain Rivers Are carrying less sediment docs not mean however that we can relax efforts to Contra soil erosion Cohen said. Only 10 percent of eroded soil gets to the oceans. The rest winds up in Stream valleys flood Plains and other areas. Although the Mississippi currently Dis charges Only about half the sediment it did in the past that still amounts to 230 million tons annually More than any other River in the nation Cohen said. Dams have had similar effects on the sediment carried by other riven. For example the amount of sediment discharged into the Gulf of Mexico by the Rio Grande once As much As 20 million tons per year now averages less than 1 Mil lion tons because of the effect of dams and reservoirs Cohen said. Sediment delivered to the Gulf of Cali fornia by the Colorado River has declined from an average 150 million tons annually to about 100,000 tons since the construction of the Hoover dam in 1935. But this Span is something special it s the Only Bridge architect Frank Lloyd Wright Ever built the new Bridge which a to open some time this month outwardly is a replica of the original. Inside however the 54-foot Concrete than is strengthened by Modem reinforcing techniques. Wright the creator of the Prairie style built what historians say is his Only Bridge in 1915 on the estate of his attorney Sher Man Booth. He also arranged for some of his students to design Bouses in the area that later were sold by Booth. After about 60 years the Aust rely de signed Span almost More a Culvert than a Bridge began developing structural prob lems local officials say. It was closed to traffic after parts of its deck fell into the Ravine in 1977. A year later the unusable Structure was named to the National Register of historic places. But that landmark status did make the Bridge usable. A fund raising drive was launched and donations from hundreds of Glencoe Resi dents made up 10 percent of the replace ment Cost. The Village government kick Din an additional 10 percent and a e ing 80 percent was picked up by the stat and Federal governments.
