The construction which includes a number of big ticket items such As $60 million Worth of dormitory additions renovation and construction and a new $10 million commissary will transform the base dramatically. Construction is due to Start in december on a new 16-Lanc Bowling Alley that should be finished in january 1987. An addition to the base Auto Hobby shop will be completed late this fall. Upgrading the base gym and adding racquetball courts will be finished by june 1987. The commissary is scheduled to open in july. The old commissary will be transformed into a base Exchange that will be far larger than the current shopping facility. The commissary and base Exchange plus a new child care Center and temporary lodging facility both Are scheduled to open in the Middle of 1987will All be located in our new Community Center area Sullivan said. Dormitory projects and construction of on base hous ing eventually will allow 90 percent of Lajes Field personnel to live on base he said. Now 559 families or More than half the 1,026 . Military families assigned to Lajes live off base.
