European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 31, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Review lion d or knocks on heaven s door by sgt. Ret Clement Lounder it is about time that somebody said ii few words about them Little red guidebooks put out by tire company. You know the one i moan their Symbol is the i tic Guy who looks like the Pillsbury doughboy after he s had a serious confrontation with a piece of John Deere equipment. In the first place i get real suspicious when f hear that people who make their Money melting rubber arc running around rating hotels and handing out stars to restaurants. These people should be finding ways to lower the Price of radials. They should be designing recaps that won t blow tread if you take them Over a cobbled Road at speeds in excess of 45 Mph. They should be maybe finding a new color for White Walls. That s what people who melt rubber should be doing. If the dimpled doughboy would produce a set of tires that go for $11, most of us would not care what he docs after that. I mention the rubber company Only because it was one of their guidebooks that almost spoiled what was supposed to be a romantic couple Days in Normandy the other week Between me and very Vern Decateur s sister Joleen. Joleen you May recall recently divested herself of a husband and has been Louring Europe on the financial arrangements that followed. I m at at Ted to her i do not know Why. Maybe it s something in the Way she eats a Creme Caramel. Whatever the reason i was prompted to invite her to Normandy for a few Days on the coast the perfect trip for Joleen is your Basic Day at the Brath. But our Little Tete a Tete was almost spoiled because Joleen had dragged along one of those Little red guidebooks and insisted on spending the whole Ime seeing everything that is there. Including your Battle on a Rug in Bayeux and your Church on the Rock that gets surrounded by water every full Moon. Mont Saint your Momma. Something like that. So instead of being holed up in some Norman the owner of the hotel lion d or with a display of a restaurant s desserts. Cottage maybe drinking Apple Brandy and listening to the rain maybe negotiating c aspects of our immediate future we were charging around in my Beetle running up serious gasoline Bills because the French would rather gel .1 Nelson on your visa to in at nil e Here ratings 1 1 i & awesome eats.
